MATRICULATION.
MARKING OF PAPERS.
SERIOUS ALLEGATIONS.
Strong c.omment on the systep of examining matriculation papers was voiced at Tuesday’s meeting of the Thames High School Board. When a proposal to congratulate Mr W. Hoult, the headmaster, on the success of the pupils was mentioned, Mr Donovan remarked that many headmasters had been at a loss to account for the failure otf pupils considered to be certain of success. Mr J. Kci'nick slated! that Mi; Hoult. had informed him. that the method of marking papers was “an absolute farce.” He (Mr Hoult) had certain proof that in p/ne Jpstanc,e “two young fellows and a girl told off to mark papers” had assured, an interested student or school that he or the school would ge,t “a good run.’' ’•Mr A. Burns (Auckland) : That rather: shakes one’s, faith in the fairness of examiners.
Replying to a question from the Rev. j. .Milne, Mr Kernick stated that Mr Hoult had proof that such a stiitement was made.
Later in the proceedings Mr Burns recalled the caise of a promising Thames student who had been failed by the examiners for matriculation. On paying a fee of ss. for the remarking of paper’s at the earnest request. of Mr Hoult, the.student was immediately accredited with a substantial pass in all subjects. A Member: It certainly seems a farcical business, and must be very disheartening to pupils and teachers.
