COLLECTING FOR UNEMPLOYED.
MAN GETS THREE MONTHS.
Since January George staddack Ongley, going under the name of Travers, had. seen canvassing the Hauraki Plains, Tham<s> Valley, *nd Auckland districts stating that he was a representattive of the Unemployed Relief Fund of Auckland. Carrying various lists, duly stamped, and signed by himself ip a false name, he_ managed by nis talk and presepae te collect many sums, large and small, from various people. Yesterday the Paeroa police were notified, and Constable McClinchy proceeded to Netherton, where he arrested tlie man at mid-day at a house where he was in the very act f.o perpetrating his despicable method of fraud.
This morning, at the Paeroa Polic,e Court, before Messrs P. E. Brenan and H. J. Hare, J’s.P., he was charged with being a rogue and a vagabond, and, through false representation, collecting alms from private individuals under false pretences.
Accused pleaded guilty and admitted that he knew he was doing wrong-
The Court sentenced him to three months hard labour.
