SWIMMING CARNIVAL.

PAEROA CLUB’S INITIAL EFFORT. UNQUALIFIED SUCCESS ATTAINED. Spectators . estimated to number about. 850 gathered at the Municipal Swimming Baths last night to. witness 100 competitors take pa.r.t in the Paeroa Swimming Club’s c.arnival. Mr W. D. Nicholas, the president, in lus opening speech welcomed the; aspirants, some of whom represented clubs as far afield as Auckland and New Plymouth, on the occasion of Paeroa’s first swimming carnival. Handicaps had been fixed with all possible fairness, and with this, in view he hoped all competitors would swim thejir best. To the spectators a hearty welcome was given, and the club’s sincere thanks for their support. As the time at theii; disposal had! been so short, the club had not beeij able to make the seating accommodation all that could be; desired', or sufficient to cope in comfort with all that were present. In future ample seating arrangements. would be assured spectators. To competitors and spectators alike he wished a most enjoyable ni- ht’s entertainment. 'the exhihit.’oii of swimming and diving that followed was all that could possibly be desired. That t'hQ handicaps were fair, and equable was manifest by the close finishes to many races, excitement running to a high pitch as on more than one occasion scratch men steadily overhauled those who had been alllowed time. The diving events were surprisingly excellent, the graceful actions Of the lady competitors drawing forth rounds of applause.
