ENTERPRISING SETTLERS
REPAIRS TO BACK MIRANDA ROAD
WEEK’S WORK BY WORKING BEE'.
Commendable enterprise has been shown, by the settlors and some intending farmers of the back Miranda Road, Waitakaruru, who, have carted about 500 cubic yards of shell and spread it on about halt a inile of their access road. .A working bee was organised by Mr; C- Adams, and twelve men and four drays were occupied' for a week.
The road was formed by the County Council last year for three miles, and ■the settlers now hope that the council will continue the work they have started. Muc,h of the; land served has been held: by Maoris, who did riot pay rates and only used it occasionally for crops of kumeras or maize. For access they used private land.. The lack of further employment by the Lands Drainage Department and the County Council has made it necessary for thqse Maoris to make their land money-producing, and as cream cartage requires an all-weather road they readily fell in with Mr Adams’ 1 proposal. They say they are working out their arrears of rates, for they want a clean sheet when they start, milking ; nqxt season. The shell was obtained from the pits near Mahuta Road, and there was no “Government stroke” or “contractor’s dodging” about the work.
