THE COUNTY ABATTOIR.
CONDITION DISCUSSED.
VIEWS OF COUNCILLORS. The question of the County Abattoir was brought up at the meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council yesterday, when C r . Morris asked the members of the council if they had seen the leader in the local papef stating that the abattoir was unsuitable and insanitary. He inquired if anything could bo done in the matter, Cr. Robinson thought that all that was at present required could be done at low cost. He suggested that the chairman and engineer view the place, and if they considered the work was warranted, to go on with it.
Cr. Mace, said that one difficulty mentioned' in the paper, that of the butchers having to wait 24 1 hours before removing a carcase, had since been settled, the inspector allowing the carcases to be taken away immediately after killing. The abattoir should be taken over by the Borough Council, but the; butchers feared in that case extra expense would be incurred, as the charges were likefly to be heavier to offset the loan to construct. new buildings. Cr. Johnstone thought that the writer of the leader had little know--1 ,'_e of local affairs. The Ohinemuri Csunty Council only retained the abattoir out of courtesy. The council could close the abattoir in a month if it so wished. Should the Borough Council take the worjks over- there would be additional c.bsts on the killing chargqs. Cr. Morris con ten decl that there w a .s no time to go into; the matter properly now. A new council would shortly be elected, and it would have to deal with the subject.
The; chairman said the abattoir had ceased to be of any benefit to the peqpie of. the countv, and merely provided local needs. The council was not. making money out of the; concern. It was only a. matter.; time when the Borough Council would have to maintain its own abattoir, as a town of 2000 and over inhabitants had to by law. The butchers and others with complaints should c.ommunicate direct with the council.’ As long as the -council received no reports di-. r.ect it would ta.ke no action.
