SWIMMING.

NGATEA CLUB’S STUNT. SUCCESS OF LADIES. Three lady members of, the Ngate,a Swimming Club, Misses L. C'. Ellis, E. Luks, and Chatfield swam down the Piakoj River from Kerepeehi to Ngatea last Saturday afternoon. The stunt was organised by thq club, and of the hen starfers the ojily other to finish was the president, Mr J- E. Reid.

The fastest time was made by Miss Ellis, who finished with a spurt about twenty minutes ahead of the other two ladies. Mr Reid had stayed behind until all the weaker swimmers had gone to the bank or been picked up by the convoying boat or launch. Thq distance is about, five miles, and Miss Ellis took about two hours. For the half-hour, when the tide was on the turn, ther.e was slack water, but later there? was a strong current. Many of the starters w ere chidrjen who had only learned to swim last season, so they did not expect to get very far. Mr J. Shaw covered' about 3% miles, when slight cramp necessitated his retirement. Master, E. Waite gave up. after covering about two miles, and ■Miss K. Barriball after going a mile. Little Miss Maud Me,Clean went over half a mile, and about the same place Masters Bertie McClean, M. Costello,, and A. Waite also gave up after very creditable attempts, considering their ages and the short length of time they have been able to swim.
