The swim from Paeroa to Kopu, attempted by Mr G. Burgess on Sunday, January 27, had tq bq abandoned by him after swimming .11% miles. The cause was stated toi be the coldness of the water. .

The vital statistics for Paer.oa for last month, with those for January, 1928, in parentheses, are as follows : Births, 5 (7) ; marriages, 1 (1) ; deaths, 1 (2).

Mr G. V. Nagel, singing Evangelist, will conduct services in the Presbyterian Church every night this week.

Among the candidates who passed the Public Service Entrance examination was a pupil of the Ng.atea District High School, Vernon Edward Keane, of Pipiroa, who sat at the Thames centre, and was number 786 in order of merit in the full Dominion list.

New Zealand naturalisation papers were granted on January 10, 1929, to the following alien biqrn: Five Dalmations, 4 Jugo-Slavs, 2 Russians, 1 Dane, 1 Pole, and 1 citizen of th® United states of America. Included in the Jugo-Slavs was Jakov Dragiceviqh, a quarryman, of Paeroa.

In the grand aggregate sc,ores, just announced, of t'he Auckland Rifle Association’s annual meeting, at the Penrose range, two members ip(f the Paeroa Rifle Club were successful in obtaining places in their respective grades. In the A grade F. C. Hubbard, of Paeroa, tied for third place with a mqmber of the Whangarei club with a total of 185 points, the winner having 188, and! R. Wells, of Paeroa, tied for second place in the B grade with a member cjf the City ami Suburbs club with 177 points, the winner having 186.

Thq. Ngatea Swimming Club will probably be well, represented at the Pae;roa Swimming Club’s gala on January 14. It is hoped that a bus-load of competitors will make the vis.it. To enable its members to take; part, in such sports the Ngatea club has affilL ated with the Squth Auckland Swimming Association.

Steady progress is being made with the erection of the new hall, in Kqrcpeehi. The enter walls are now finished with the exception of. windows and! doors, the floor lias been laid, and thq framework fqr the partitions, stage, and gallery is receiving attentiqn.

Mr A. D. Mc,De;U :has been appointed sole teacher at Pipiroa, Mr W. Dickspn having been transferred! to the T'e Aroha District High School. 'Mrs H. Goldthorpe, late of Pipir.oa, has been appointed head teachey at Turlwiri. Miss H. J. Dajdy has been appointed head teacher at Patetcinga', and Miss C. G. Fos.ter, daughter qf Mr and Mrs C. S- Foster, Ngatea, has been appointed to the Whitiora school.
