PATETONGA ROADING.
CONTRACT LET. A THREE-YEAR PROGRAMME. A contract has been let by the Lands Drainage Department for, the metalling of over eight milqs of Patetonga roads. The successful tenderer was Mr RL. Worth, of Te Puke, and according to the conditions of the contract he will be to quarry and' deliver approximately 2500 cubic yar.ds of metal within the next fourteen weeks. This metal will form the first course on the; three-mile section of the Patetonga-Morrjnsville road between Tramline Road and the end of the piako County’s metal at the corner of the Maukoro Landing road. Between October, 1929, and March, 1930, the contractor, is required to complete this road and metal the Patetonga-dfaihere roadl as far as the Mangawhqro Road .corner, and. in the 1930-31 season the r.oad to Kaihere is to be finished and 100 chains of. Tramline Rcacjj metalled. In accordance with the Government practice, the amount of the tender will not be divulged for some time, but an indication of the value can be gauged from an extract from a letter received bj r the Hauraki Plains County Council at its last meeting. Refer,ring to the apportionment of tlie whole of. the cost, the letter stated: “The approximate requirements for the three seasons during which the contract is to be carried out are : From January 1 to March 31, 1929, Government subsidy £2640, county contribution £660 ; from November 1, 1929, to March 31, 1930', Government subsidy £6400, county £1600; November 1, 1930, to February 28, 1931, Government subsidy £4'578, county £1256.” The metal is to be obtained from the site at Maukoro which the Hauraki Plains County Council acquired some years ago for a quarry.' The council prospected at various places in a gully at the head of the Maukoro Landing road and found ample supplies of suitable stone, but economic factors prevented the; quarry being opened up to serve the whole county.
The contractors will be required, to provide access to this quarry and, for their own benefit, improve the Mau-
kor<j Landing road. It is not anticipated that the access will be; a very cos.tly matter, as it should be comparatively easy to .widen the track of. an old timber tramway througji Mrs Caldwell’s farm. '
In accordance; with its agreement, the Lands Department will recondition the roads, fill depressions with clay, provide clay for haunching, and spr.ead the metal. The first of this work commenced on MJondiay last. Aftqr having been isolated every winter for the past decide by -impassable roads, the people of Patetonga can hardly realise that work has already started, and* that access by medalled roads to Morrinsville will be available next winter.;
