FIRE IN HILL STREET.
RESIDENCE GUTTED. FEW ARTICLES SAVED. At three o’clock on Saturday morning a fire was discovered in Mr F. McQuillan’s six-roomed residence in lo.wer Hill Street. Mr McQuillan and Mr McKenzie, who also resided in the house, both heard a crackling .noise, anti they arrived at the kitchen at the same moment and found it ablaze. Mr. McQuillan rushed to the nearest telephone and rang up the brigade, which was soon o,n the scene. The inmates, were aroused, and Mr and Mr,s Shanaghan, who were rent-, ing rooms in the house, were fortunate in saving; most of their belongings. Mr McQuillan was not sb fortunate. W'hep the fire brigade arrived the water, pressure was not goo.d, but it improved later and the brigade was enabled to save the two front rooms of the building. The remaining portion was complete;!’; gutted. The origin of the fire is unknown. The house was owned by Mr McQuillan, and the value was set down at £450, the insurance being £250. The furniture was; valued at £2OO arid insured for £l5O. FIRE AT MAUKAYTOWN. MOTOR LORRY DESTROYED. A fire occurred at Mackaytown on Saturday morning, a s'hed containing a large quantity of benzihe and a motor lorry belonging to Messrs Lovett Brothers, contractors, of Auckland, being destroyed. The origin of the fir,§ is unknown.
