Some quarters of Eastbourne have suffered a plague of snails of late (says the “Dominiton”). One keen gardener registered a c.atch of 800 on a recent night. The hunt began a little after 10 o’clock, and the gardener became so absorbed in the task i» hand that the other members of the family, thinking that all hands had gone to bed, locked up for the night, and a distinctly unpopular spall-hunt-er had eventually to rouse the household before he could get in. It Is stated that following the recent damp days it has been a common occurrence to collect a bucketful of snails without any special effort;
The man who jumped' off the wharf to catch a boat which he discovered later was berthing instead' of leaving had his. prototype in a Wellington traveller recently. He was bound for New Plymouth, a nd, arriving at the station, placed Ihis baggage in an empty carriage. He then strolled up the platform to buy cigarettes, and on his return could not find his baggage. After a vain search he was accosted by a porter, who asked! whether .the traveller owned several bags that were; on the platform. With relief. the traveller, saild he did. “Well,” said the po.rter, “you would do better to get into the right train, as the one; you were in doesn’t leave until the morning.”
