SWIMMING CLUB.
COMPETITION RACESi CONTINUED. SENIOR MEMBERS RESULTS. A large number of members of the Paeroa Swimming Club attended at the baths last evening to witness the, first races for senior members for the; handicap points prize. The distance was 33 1-3 yards. The men’s rae.e had to be swum in three heats of six contestants. The results, were as follows :— Men. —First heat: Steward, 1 ; .Stewart, 2. second heat: Fraser, 1; Pringle, 2. Third heat: Denize, 1 ; Watsch, 2. Final: Denize, 1 ; Fraser, 2; Steward, 3. Time, 20sec.
Ladies.—Mrs B. Raffills, 1; Miss Argali, 2. Boys.—Dickson, 1 ; Simmonds, 2. Time, 29sec.
Tlie number of benzine pumps on the Hauraki, Plains is steadily increasing. One pump was completed at Nga 4 .tea last week,, making five, and two additional pumps are being installed at Waitakaruru, making four, in that district.
On the way from the north of Rhodesia down to Bulawayo the. driver of a goods train recently ran. into a herd of qlephants qn| the line. All cleired except one youngster, who would not budge. Its mother came tack and! lifted him off the rails, but cnee more he returned. Eventually the drivqr and guard, whom he did not seem to mind in the least, lifted him into the van. When the train arrived in Buluwayo .the elephant s.tepped out ami followel the guard to his home, where; he had a nkp on the dopstep. Then he had a game with a Great Dane. The guard is now anx-. ious to give up this, pet, as he cannot afford to supply the huge quantity of milk it consumes.
This week’s issue ef the ? ‘N.Z. Sport-, ing and Dramatic, Review” is sure to prove popular, on account of the forthecming Christmas racing carnival. Racing enthusiasts will be attracted to the fine snapshots of the Waipa Racing Club’s annual meeting and two pages of individual snaps, of Auqk-and Cup candidates. The centre pages are attractively set out with overseas subjects. The membqrs of H.M.S. Phijomel holding their annual sports at Devonport are pictured in a lively series, while special prominence is given to thq official opening of the West End Rowing Club. “Breakingup” day at the various colleges i’Sj pictured in charming sets of pictures. The frontispiece is specially charming and chic, and the coloured supple-; ment of Jqpettq Gilmore, the dancer, has its own particular charm. Other sections ar,e well up to their usual standard.
