WORKS IN THE BOROUGH

PROGRESS DURING THE MONTH. REPORT BY COMMITTEE. The Works Committee presented the; following report to the Paeroa Blough Council meeting last night on the work carried out during the month:— “Maintenance.—The usual maintenance has been carried out since our last meeting. Gr,ass has been scythed on some of the wqrst footpaths, an 4 this, work will be continued as it becomes necessary to attend to same. Bituminous surfacing has been commenced on Upper Hill Street from Kennedy Street. This street -was disintegrating, and would not have stood up to present traffic unless something was done. “Maini Highways.—The summer pro--, gramme of resurfacing has been started. From the Te Aroha Road boundary to the new traffic, bridge has been given one coat of % chips with two coats of bitumen, and covered finally with %-inch chips and well rolled, with shoulders strengthened as required. Work has also been commenced on Belmont Road from the railway c,rinsing. “Sub-grade drainage is being done on Thames Road at the foot of Primrose Hill, -where soakage has caused a breakdown in the highway fojr. abo.ut two chains. “Water Reticulations.—There has been more than usual work necessary under this heading. Several old services have broken, and frequent complaints have been received with reference to low pressure or total absence of supply c-n the high levels. Bennett Street is in the worst position in this respect, and it is absolutely necessary to lay the largpr. mains as proposed! in this area, and the work will be pu-t in hand as early as conveniently possible. Material is als,o being ordered for the Rye Lane-Kennedy Street extension on 4-inch cast-iron water mains. “There has been a rather consistent reduction in pressure- during the past month which is giving sqme concern, and the matter is being further inquired into. “Advantage was taken of having, the street open for drainage purposes to lay a 2-inch supply across NOrmanby Road to serve the proposed hospital. “Owing to the condition of old services it is considered desirable to extend, in 3-inch cast-iron if possible, a main under the footpath round the Criterion Hotel, and from the Royal Mail Hotel to Brenan and Co.’s stable. )Ve suggest that authority be given to proceed with this work when Convenient. “Relief of Unemployment Works.— The principal work under this heading, including equipment for the children’s playground, has been completed, and the men have been absorbed on main highways and other work.”
