Preparations are being made by the local shopkeepers for the festival season. Already a number, have decked but their windqws, showing What Santa Claus may include in his ramblings at Christmas time. Miss L. M. Real, at present assistant at the Hikurang’’ school, has been appointed assistant mistress at Pae-, roa, in place of Miss E. Freeman. There were 33 applicants for the position. A “sale of gifts’’ afternoon is to be held at the Paerqa School on Wednesday next, December, 12, commencing at 2 o’clock. There will be a programme by children, and afternoon tea will be available. The proceeds are to be devoted to the infant department, and parents and frjends are asked to attend and support the schqol. A collision occurred this morning in Station Rqad' between Mr Jttlinh’s motor-car and Mr Williams’ milk-.van. The car had' its right mudguard badly bent and the tyre punctured, while the milk-van had one Wheel knocked off. Fqrtunately nobody jvas hurt.
The work of maintaining and improving the Turua Town Board’s roads is to be continued. At Wednesday’s meeting of the board the works committee was authoi.ised to prqceed, with a limit to expenditure of £3OO. Th© work will be done through the County Council, to enable the highway subsidy to be collected'.
The neighbourhood of the Puhsnga Canal, Ngatea, is a busy place at the present time. The metalling cf the roads on both sides of the canal is proceeding rapidly, and with metal scows discharging, awaiting discharge, or awaiting a tide tq depart, there is usually three or four vessels in the river. The NgatearKaihere road is being metalled by the Lands Drainage Department for the County Coum oil, and as work is starting from the Ngatea end, drays are being used. Motor lorries are being used by the Cqunty Council’s contractors for the metalling of the road on the Island side of the canal.
The aquatic carnival held at Tauranga every year will be held on the 27th inst., and- in view of the fact that the district is now served by Railway, a particularly attractive programme of launch, sailing, swimming, and rowing events, with many other side attractions and competitions, has been drawn up, and there is no doubt that this popular attraction will draw a large crowd. Special excursion fares and trains have been arranged. Entries close on the 15th instant.
A request from Mr P. A. Dryden for repairs to Orere Street, Turua, was declined by the Town Board on Wednesday evenipg, as the properties on Orere Road already have access to Oparia and Hauraki roads.
