Hnut, and Wallace Hcpton, asking to have a private} road legalised, was before the .Ohinemuri County Council ion Thursday. The petition was as follows :— “We, the undersigned ratepayers, having a,cces,s to the Old Te Aroha Road by a private road divided into strips wish to have this private road le!ga,lised and made into, a county We are, eaclh a,n;d severally, prepared to hand over our interests for the above purpose. We are also prepared to form up, ready for metaling. the ill t 34 chains, or be subject to; a) small rate.” The c.hairman said that there was a minute on the books of the; council that no road equid be taken over unless it was metalled. This; was dope to prevent the expens, d o,f roads a.nd metalling failing on, the council. When this block was subdivided) the owners g.e.t over the difficulty i.p| a very shrewd way by providing a chain road and giving each 8,60110)0 a strip of t ie io,ad out to the main Te Aroha load. The; position now was that the responsibility w.ag, shifted bn to the present, owner. However, h,e ffi't that if the council co,uld! without detriment to itself improve the condition; of the settlers, it should help them to legalise the road- Withp,ut this, help the settlers, could not obtain a grapt fqr metalling this road. Cr. Johnstone said) he was thoroughly conversant with the pbsitiO|U. Originally it .was q very deeply-laid scheme to ev.a;de the provision's of t'.’.e Act, and he felt that assistance should be given to, these 'settlers if 1 o-siblc. They were prepared to help thein.-.elves to. a certain extent. Cr. Mace said he wquld agree if the applicants would pay the) costs entailed in the legalisation. In reply to. the chairman the c,lerk said he had no definite information on the matter, but he thought the cost would be between £2O and £3O. He could not say whetheir a survey wquld be required, but he. considered that one was; necessary. The .chairman said that the petitioner.-:. wanted, a legal road so that they could apply for a gr.apt. Cr. JOjhnstone proposed tihiat thq counc.il accept dedication the road provided the settlers undertake to pay the posts of legalisaiton. Seconded by Cr,. Hubbard’and carried.
