PASTOR HORSEWHIPPED
ATTACKED BY WOMEN. SEQUEL TO LOST COURT ACTION. SY.DNEY, Sept. 14. Wielding p stockwhip and c,ane, two women qavagqly attacked' a Baptist pastcjr in a street at Petersham, last night and inflicted severe punishment on him before he was able ta make ihis escape, writes a Sydney correspondent. “I’ve been waiting for you for the past two hours,” shouted one of them“l bought, thisi whip tc r day to get at yqu.” With that she rushed on him and slashed him across the face and body. Her companion, who was armed with a sitout c.ane, .ajlso. attacked the Rev. Yates and beat him about .the body. His companion, a youhg, woman, ran away and left him to the mercy of his assailants. They set about him and whipped him incessantly with whip and cane. His screams for help brought a big crowd into, the street, but, none offered to cciine to his assistance. “You beat us in Court,” again S|hc,uted onei of the women;, “but you won’t; beat us here.” She continued to beat him with the whip, the lash of which struck the man in the fa.cei many times,, inflicting large weals across the face and! hands. He sought to escape their, attack, but was beset at front and rear. His appeals for help from the crowd fell on deaf eajrs; However, lie managed to beat a retreat up a l ane > and, still pursued by the two anjgry women, managed to reach the Petiershcm police station. He took refuge in; the polic.e station yard, but, was followed in there by the- two women, still wielding the whip , and ca|ne. I Finally the station sergeant heard I his, call® for help an,d intervene 1, hold--1 I ing .the women off. I “Give us in charge, go Q,n)!'” they I I both screamed ; “You’re frightened !” I The police sergeant sent the women I out of the station, but. the man reI fused tci take action against them I through the police, stating that he I ■ wquld take out a civil summons. He was acquitted- Prior ta that incident it i|S understood that, he became enamoured of I out: of the women, whc-ni he- met in I Parramatta Rbad one day when she I w.a,s waiting for a bus. He offered I her a lift into town in. his car,- and • continued ' the acquaintanceship for I some time While on & I tour of the north he wrote her snvI eral passionate letters, Which were produced in ciourt when he wad tried for assault. In the I'ettehs he con,I fessed that he, though' a married man I with grown-up children, w.a-; infatuI ated with one of the women and wanted her to wait until he could get a diI vorce, and theta-marry him. I She herself was living' apart from I her husband, whom she was; also suing for divorce. Yates, is alleged ita have I given advice and introduced her. to his I solicitor, who had acted for her in I Obtaining a divorce. But before tihie I decree, nisi was pronounced! finally her. I former husband called on her in an I endeavour to, make friends again, and I was found with his former wife by I Yates. Yates, it was alleged, at court, I fumed ajnfli raged, and when he called later on the woman, threatened to kill I her. He struck her several itimess, and I it was .for these blows that' he was I ta.kqn.to court on a charge of assault. I However, he wag acquitted, and! last night’s whipping episode was evidentr I ly .the sequel tb thaf court cas.e. I He asked -the police for protection during the night, and! a constable. was stationed at fris ga.te throughout the n igh.t. No attempt Was made, however, to force ani entrance. It was one of the most sensational happenings in the district, and brought thousands into the street. A peculiar feature was the failure of ianyonq in, the crowd to go to Yates’, assistance when h& was being whipped by two anjgry women.
