Usually the circumstances -pre that chains are put on ,a;t the approach to an unmetalled piece of road, but not removed when metal is again reached., owing sometimes to the fact that further, o.n chains, are again required. The result is that the intervening metal gets badly cut up by the chains, hence the wroth of the council, engineer, and ratepayers. Two cases in point occurred at the Putaruru Police Co.urt. on Thursday, before Mr S. L. Paterson. S.M., the prosecutions being in the name of the county ranger, Mr E. W. Jordan. Mr Lewis said the c,aSe was not. a; bad one, but the council wi. s hed the matter given publicity. The using of chains on metal was very damaging. The council insisted tha.t the regulations slliould be observed. The defendant was a farmer in the district. Ernest Joseph Darby, farmer and Putaruru riding member on the Matamata County Council, gave evidence in support of the prosecution. The defendant, pleaded guilty. He said the chains were yjecesSary on the •mud, .ajid he had to use them again afer traversing a few chaips of metal. He was, convicted and ordered to pay posts l , 12s. ' A similar action was taken C. A. Bond, earlier, of Huntly, but the ease wa,s dismissed.
