SETTLERS DISCUSS' THE PROBLEM. SPECIAL RATING AREA FAVOURED A meeting of settlers was held in the Hikutaia West Schoql on Wednesday evening, last, the fallowing being present: Messrs J. Thqmas, A. Gubb, V. Young, A. Rl. Robinfion, I. M. Robinson, f. Hanlen, R. Alexander, M. Morrison, C. Vedd&r, J. Murdock, W. K. Morrison, G. O. Avery, R. Avery, F. Hopping, and S. Smith. Mr. A. R. Robinson said that he had convened the meeting to get an expression of the settlers’ wishes with reference tq drainage matters. The Public Works Department was prepared to clean out and batter Alexander’s drain if an organisation was set up which would adequately look after its future maintenance. Approval had been given; for. the Provision qf “aji. extra 4ft culvert in the stop-bank 30 chains above the Kaimanawa rbad, with a drain fallowing the section boundary tq connect it with the Hikutaia-Ferry -Road drain. It was desired tq have an expression of the, settlers’ wishes, so that the Ohinjemuri County Council would be in a position to. come tq a definite decision. The Public Works Department considered that the best way of providing for the mainteuiance by the settlers was for the Ohinemuri County Council tq set up a special rating district and the counqil thereby acting as a drainage beard for the a.rea. A good deal of discussion followed the reading of the letter, from the department to the Ohinemuri County Coiuncil on. the matter, ,a.nd the following resolutions were carried unanimously “That the settlers agree to the Public Woji-ks Department’s request to maintain the canal when completed, and that the Ohiniemuri County Ctuncil be advised to this effect.” “That the Ohinemuri County Council eb advised to include all the Public Works Department’s drains that have been in the prPtpoSed special rating district from Waiinarie Benfi to Kaimanawa Wharf Roa.d apd the railway line.” “That the Ohinemuri County Council put before the Public Works Depar.tmenit the advisability of endavouring to carry on the stop-bank tq the foot of tlie hills from Waimarie Bend anld making the Komata. North capal the main outlet.”
