Tlie Thame: Valley’ inter-union competition for the Frank Pojand Memorial Cup was continued on Saturday afternoon, the Paerda representatives playing against Piako at Te Arolia, and the; Hauraki Plains fifteen visiting Waihi. Victories were gained by Paeroa a,pd Waihi, an,d as a resfult these two teams are leve.l at the head of the competition ai]|d will have' to play off to decide which, one is to hold the cup. PAEROA V. PIAKO. a fair cro.wd ox spectators witnessed the Paeroa v. Piako match at Te Arolia, which ended in a, win for. the former by' .11 pointe to 5. The' game was a Door exhibition of Rugby. Piako started qff well with some nippy passing movements, but after twenty minutes of play the dash was gone an|d from then onward -mo.;t of the proniinenit features were the result of individual effort. They were weak in defence, and, their bad .tackling was the cause of their losing the match. O Donoghue was the pick of the Piako fqr.wards, and was an honest, worker, from start to finish. Munro played a fine, game behind the pack, and gave Ills backs every opportunity to Show their, metal. Lipsey was, the weak link. Arkle played a good game, and Towers was very prominent but ■e.ndea.voured to cjo far too much qn his own. For. Paeroa Froj t and Southby were, the outstanding forwards. Nield, as rover, w.a;s. poor, while Mcßae, the half-back, and Smart and McKar.vey, the two five-eighths, were decidedly weak in their respective positions. Lockett bore the brunt of the defence, tackling soundly ajl .the time, while McQuatters was outstanding in attack. Rare played well, but W.a.tene on the wing was not impressive. Piako—Goldsbury, ’ Arkle, Towers, Reid, .Lip-ey, Stewart, Munr.q. Cleave, Fife, Mace, Luxton,, Clarkin, Wallace, Riddle., O’Donqghue. Paeroa kicked off, and Piako immediately set up a loose rush which went tq the line and the visitors forced. Passing and a loefse .rush by Paeroa put Piako on the defensive. Rare punted, high and by following up regained possession. With only Goldsbury to, beat he -scut out to Smart, who failed to hold the ball an.d an easy try was missed. Play swung tq Paeroa’e end, and from a scrum neat passing by Piako saw Towers cross the, linie for a wc-11-dererved try. Reid converted. Piako 5, Paeroa 0. Piako worked down the field in loose play, and a centring kick by Reid, followed by a high punt on the part of Towers, put Paeroa, in a precarious pqsitiofi. However, in a serum on the line between the posts Piako committed a breach and the visitors cleared. In open play the ball went to Reid, who had an unsuccessful drop-kick at goal. Paeroa kept up the pressure, and in loose play Watene passed In to Southby, who scored a good try near the posts; Mcßae converted. Paerqa 8, Piako. 5. After half-time play was ragged for a few minutes. From a scrum in midfield Piako hooked and the ball travelled out to Towers., who put in- a goqd run, and l entered Paeroa’s territory. The Paeroa forwards wbrked out. again. Goldsbury endeavoured to clear from a forward rush, but his kick was blqcke'd and the rebound saw the ball go out near the hqme team’s corner flag. The Piako forwards cleared, and after an interchange of kicks Paeroa. forced. Neil retired and was replaced by Morrow. In tight Play near Piako’s twehjty-iive smart followed up a kick and a serttm op the line resulted. Piako gained the advantage, but with a penalty kick Paeroa resumed the attack. Mcßae failed with another free kick and the Piako fqrwards swooped down the field, the quarter ending with Paeroa defending. Open, play ensued in| neutral .territory for a considerable time after the commencement of the last round. Paeiba gained ground in loose' play, but. Towers broke through and cleared well down the field. For the winners H. Moore and F. Clayton scores a try each, J. Rackham kicked a penalty goal, H. Moore dropkicked a goal from the fiell, and Rackham converted one of the tries. For West Sb’fleld and Poland scored a try each. THIRD-GRADE JIATCH. WEST DEFEATS EAST. The East and We-st third-grade teams met as a curtain-raiser to the junior knockout game on the local domain on Saturday, and after a very close game West won by eight points to. 6. C.
