FOOTBALL.
HOLLER MILLS SHIELD. PROGRESS OF COMPETITION. Considerable interest is being, ta.kep locally in the Roller Mills Shield Rugby compatitio,n, which is being played by boys attending primary schools in the Auckland province. Tlie chief attraction on Wednesday afternoon, was the game between the Tha.mes Valley boys (shield hqldery) and the Auckland A team. One of the finest exhibitions of Rugby football seen at Paeroa for a Iqng while resulted in a draw, tlie scores being eleven pe'nty all. From the kick-off to the end of tlie game a crack L n,g pace was set. and hard, but clean, play characterised the match. The Thames Valley boys realised that in the opposing team they were meeting their, strongfest opponents, and with that knowledge they gave qf their heist. At half-time the Aucklanders had a lead of five points, but for the remainder of the game Valley more than held its o,wn both in defence and attack, and succeeded in, equalising the scores.
For Thames Valley tries were scored by Coxhead and Beaton; Curtis kicked a penalty goaj, and Cqxhead converted one of the tries. The Auckland score was made up of a try by Lo,wther, which 'he converted, and two penalty goals, by Seagar and Green. Mr F. T. V. Johns,on was referee.
Other results were,: Waipa 7. v. Hamilton 3. L. Kidd drop-kicked a goal from the field ami A. Morris scored a try for Waipa. while D. Paterson scored a try fo.r Hamilton. Mr T. C. Arnold was referee. Two matches were played at Te Aroha. Auckland B defeated South Auckland by 15 points to 7, and Auckland C. defeated King Country by 12 to 3.
The competition was cqntinued yesterday aftern.oon in fine weather. and ''n the presence of a large number of spectators. The first match was played between Thames Valley and Hamilton, and was really a fiasco so far. as the scores were concerned. The Thames Valley team appeared to be able to score whenever, it felt inclined, and at the end of the game haff registered 53 points, whilst Hamilton, had not s.co,red. Tries were sepreff by Pilkington (4), A wary (3), Low’s (2), Stace (2), Berryman, Hinchco, Tilsley, and Cor.nthwaite. M. Curtis and Coxhead converted a try . each. Mr F. T. V. Johnson was referee. The second match was played between Auckland A and Waipa,. and Resulted in a win for Auckland A by 21 points to 0. Mr, W. T. Jonas was referee.
This afternoon the final game; of the section will be played between Thames Va'lley and Auckland A, cammcncing at 2.30 o’clqck. Mr Johnson will referee. The final match of the competition will be played to-morrow afternoon.
On Wednesday night .the visiting teams- were the guests qf Mr. P. J. Jenqhigsi at a picture entertainment, and yesterday morning a number of local Rugby entbusiaahs loaned their, motor-cars for the purpose of taking, the boys to Waikino. There- they were met by Air E. Johnson, manager of the Victoria, battqry, who cqnducled them over the works. The visit was both interesting and educative, and! the boys thoroughly enjoyed the trip. KNOCK-OUT COMPETITIONS. TO-MORROW’S MATCHES. The first games in the Drjisdale Cup (senior) and Frank Williams Shield (junior) knock-out competitions will be. played .to-morrow afternoon. The. West and Veterans teams will meet at the domain, wh'le the Pirates fifteen will journey to Hikutaia fqr the purpose of playing Suburbs. Both these, senior gameb are to commence at 3 p.m., and the respective referees selected are Messrs J. M. Crosby and W. T. Jonas. In the junior .compeUtjon; the East fifteen will meet -the newly formed Maori team oil the No. 2 grqunff at 1.45 p.m. Mr T. C. Arnold will control tre game. As a, cur.ta'in-ra.kcr to the senior match the final game for the Northern Roller Mills Shield will be played between the two leading primary school teams. This match should be well worth seeing, and it is scheduled to commence at 1.45 p.m. under the cqntrbl of Mr. F. T. V. Johnson. The follqwing teams have been selected :— SENIORS. West.—D. Fraser, J. PLAINS NOTES.
With the exception of a Poland Cup match at Waihi on September 1 and return matches at Thames on September 22, the Rugby seas'qn, on the Hauraki Plains has .concluded. The Ngatea Club, winners of the senior grade competition, may have further gained as a challenge l has be'en entered for the Duff Cup, at preisenf held by the Mataura Club, Waihi.
