WATER SUPPLY SCHEME.

PROPOSAL AT WAITAKARURU. NEW AREA FORMED. A special meeting of the Hauraki Plains Coulnty Council was held on Mc-'iiday to declare' a new water, supply area, to be kfiown as the' Waitak.a,ruru Water Supply District. In reply to a question by Cr. Hicks, Cr. C. W. Harris, who presided, said tha,t tlie proposed area would take -its supply from the Hauraki Plains West waiter supply mains and would be on exactly tiffe'same footing. -

Cr. Parfitt doubted the wisdom of inclulding the area of de’- ? o unsettled peat land, and it was unlikely to be settled for. fifteen years or. so. Thus a, -supply of water would have to be held in reserve for this area, and an, oppoitupity might be presented to sell the water elsewhere. A request for water might be received from Kopuarahi. He was of the opinion that a smaller anea would be preferable, as it would be a- costly matter to replace the small service mains with larger, larger ones, which.would, biei required when the whole reticulation litßl to be undertaken. Cr. -Harris pointed' out that the area had been defined at a me’e.tipig of settlerjj.

In reply to Cr. Miller, Cr. Parfitt said that of 'the 3500 acres hi the area there were about 1600 acres unoccupied except for winter grazing. Cr. Parfitt observed that in the driest part of last summer there was sufficient water gqing over the da,m t-o serve another 12,000 acres. He had no objection to the proposal, but would like to see a quicker market for. the available water.

Cr. Madgwick observed that there was nothing, surer than that a requisition yvculd be -made .next summer few the reticulation qf the Kopuarahi district.

In reply tc\ Cr. Parfitt the clerk stated that the peat sections would become liable for rates as soon as they became settled. Cr. Parfitt moved that the special order be adopted. Cr, Madgwick seconded,, and the motion was carried. Cr. Hicks moved, and Cr. Reid seconded, that formal application be ma,de for permission to raise a loan.— Carried. On the motion of Cr. Hicks it was decided to ninke appPcaion for a Government. subsidy on, the same basis as was granted the Hauraki Plains West water supply area.
