OBITUARY.
MRS. ANN GRIFFITHS. One of the earliest settlers in this district in, the: person of Mrs) Ann Griffiths passed away at 'hen residence, Auckland, late on Saturday night. Corn in Wa.les just over, 86 years ago. deceased- came to New Zealand with •her husband, the late Mr Owen Griffiths, in the sailing ship Queen of ■Mercy, and settled at Auckland. Later they removed to Thames, where MrGriffiths founded a carrying business. About 43 years ago deceased, with her husband and young family, came to Paeroa, where Mr Griffiths was engaged in carting mining machinery from Paeroa to the Waihi district. About 11} yea’A agq deceased left Paeroa for. Auckland, where s;he resided up to the time of her death. The late Mrs Griffiths went through some stirring times during the' Maoni war at Thames and later at Paeroa, but good health and a ehegry optiniisfm helped considerably .to, smooth out the difficulties and privations encountered in the early days. Many people 'had good reason to be grateful .to Mrs Griffiths, and her, demise .will be regretted, especially by the older settlers in the district. Two daughter. ■Mesdames J. Pearce an,d J. Cqo,te, qt Auckland, ami three sons, Messrs I lav id ard GeW-ge Griffiths, of Auckland. and Charles Griffiths, of Paeroa, arc left to mourn their loss, and to them the sympathy of a wide circle of friends is extended. Deceased is to be interred at the Pukeiiimu Cemetery, Paeroa, this afternoon, on the arrival of the Taura nga expreps.
