THE THAMES INSTITUTIONS.

REPORTS FOR MONTH OF JULY.

Tlie following reports were submitted to Monday’s meeting of the Thames Hospital and Charitable Aid Board :—

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT.

The medical superintendent, Dr. W. SowcTby, reported that 52 males and 38 females had been admitted during tlie month, pud 47 males and 3S females had been discharged, leaving 44 males and 34 females in the institution at date. In ,the' department 14 pa,tients had been treated, involving. GO attendances. The number of operations performed was 34. The daily average of occupied beds for the month was 74, which was well above the average. In adopting the report the chairman remarked' that there were 84 patients in the institution on Sunday' last. MATRON’S REPORT. The matron, Miss K. M. AnsennW reported at length o ( n domestic and staff matters. A sister we.uld be available and willing to return to Thames as a massage sister next month, and there was an urgent need for the services of such a person. There was no provision for fitting up a steam tent, and a, case of diphtheria, was being nursed in the main ward. A suggestion was made that steam from the sterilising room should be connected. to one of the isolation wards to enable the steam tent to be worked. There had been seven patients admitted to the mate, Unity annexe. There had been, six births, and five mothers and three babies were remaining at date. The chairman said that previously Sister. Pearce had rendered great service as a masseuse. He thought that in view of the fact that there were several cases which would benefit by massage treatment the services of Sister Pearce’should be availed of as scon as she was free to, .take up the position. Tlie report, was adopted, and the recommendations brought down were approved of. As a member of the 'hospital cejnmitt.ee Mr Brenan reported that the house -surgeon had no mirror for use when shaving. It wa.s undesirable that the- officer should havefio shaye with the aid of a mirror situated in the staff quarters. The secretary explained that the mirror, required was an outsize and ce.uld not be procured. Mr Brenan Said he did not ca.i’e what the size- wad so long as the matter was treated as, urgent. After some discussion the matter was referred to the secretary, with power to, act. PATETONGA NURSE. The Pate-tonga district nurse, Miss M. McLeod, reported having treated nine patients during the month, involving 15 visits. Fees collected totalled £2 Is Gd. NURSE TO NATIVES. The district nuW .to Natives, Miss L. Jamieson, j-epqrted that she had attended and advised 32 Natives and 3 Europeans, making a total of 48 visits. There had been two births. Lectures had been given on . diet in illness, chest troubles, and treatment of scabies. Eight pahs .had been visited, a.iffi two schools. Generally, taei’e was very' little sickness among Natives at the. present time. ENGINEER’S REPORT. The engineer, Mr A. M. Somerville, reported that steam for heating purposes liad been in use .throughout the 'month, and the laundry had; been in daily us,e : . The coal consumption was 58 tons 10c n't. TARARU HOMES. The superintendent of the District Homes. Tararu (Mr J. Applcy), reported that one male inmate had been admitted during the month, and 15 males and 1 female were remaining al date. Commenting bn the farm, the report stated that feed was scarce, and the garden was rather backward owing to the- wet weather. The. egg production for the month was 146 dozen.
