HAURAKI PLAINS COUNTY

WORKS DURING TILE MONTH.

ENGINEER’S REPORT.

The Hauraki Plains County engineer, Mr F. Basham, reported to the council on Thursday last as follows '• —

Main Highways.—Owing to the continuous wet weather 1 was obliged to put on an extra tractor ,a,nd grader to cope with the work required. I propose keeping same on foi' about t-,vo more weeks, according to -the weather. Good progress 'has been made with surfacing in various districts. About three scow loads e,f dredged sliingle will complete surfacing from Puke bridge to Pekapeka Road. Various lengths have been surfaced between Ngatea and Waita, karui',u.

“Kopua.ra'hi Wharf. —The repairs to this wharf are completed, the cash expenditure being £3.1 15s, which with the timber from the yard 1 , will bring the total cost to about £4O. The wharf is now in very fair Qfder. and if not overloaded should be serviceable for some years, with minor repairs from time, to time.

“Flool Damans. —So. far. as roads are concerned very little damage was caused by the recent floods. On the the newly-metalled portion of the Kaihere-Torehape Roads slips occurrdl, and the cost of removal will be about. £BO. At Coxhead’s Filling a. washout in the filling occurred at the, southern abutment of the old bridge. Before doing anything, in the nature of repairs I consulted the resident engineer, Public Works Department, Paeroa, and it was agreed that a new

span of 20ft would be a better policy than filling it in with earth. The estimated 1 cost of the span is £l2O. Further damage to the extent of £6O was done lc ( batters of filling, and stop-bank. Application for £1 for £1 tovvards the. cost of this work and removing slips at Torehape has been made. I interviewed Cr. Harris, who agreed- with the decision to construct the, proposed new span, and work has been commenced on same, which should be .completed by the middle of next week. “Huirau Read ' Bridge.—l estimate the cost of replacing the old bridge' with 4ft pipes, filling it. in, and metalling and sealing the road, at a total of £40.”
