HAURAKI PLAINS COUNTY

MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING.

The Hauraki Plains County Council met at Ngatea yesterday, the following being present: Crs. C. W. Darris, J. C. Miller, W. Madgwick,. H. H. Hicks, J. A. Reid, C. W. Parfitt, J. F. Mayn, anil Messrs E. A: Mahoney (clerk) and F. Basham (engineer). The chairman, Cr. E. L. Walton, having been cabled away, Cr. C. W. Harris was appointed to preside.

Yawaiti roads. Mr A. M. SajnueL M.P., forwarded a letter from t'he Minister, of Public Works advising that when tliis year’s estimates were being prepared the council’s request for an increase of subsidy to £2 for £1 on certain Awaiti district roads wowljd receive consideration.

FLOOD DAMAGE.

The resident engineer of the Public Works Department at Paeroa advised that he had recommended chat £250 free money be added to. the council’s application for State assistance. This was on account of flood damage at , Coxhead’s Filling. .

OUTLET' REQUIRED.

H. McLean and E). Campbell, Shelly Beach, KopuaTahi. wrote asking that a road be opened to the KopuarahiOrdngo road. There was no prospect of the river road to the Kopuarahi wharf ever being meta,lied? If the ■road which was desired was opened the settlers would be enabled .to supply the cheese factory and get connections with the telephone exchange and electric power ma,ins. The route suggested-was 82 chains lang, and was along the boundary of sections two and three.

Cr. Mi'Ueii, the riding representative, stated that,there was no chance whatever of the river road ever being metalled, as most of the sections also fronted the ro;a,fi. He favoured gi’ajiting the request.' A committee comprising the •county chairma.n, riding ‘member, engineer, and clerk was deputed to investigate the matter and report. : • CREAM STANDS. ’ The Te Aitoha Dairy Co., Ltdi, made application for permission to erect cream stands at Dajgety’s corner. Hopai Roa.d. corner, Rawerawe Road corner, and Kerepeehi Conner. It was pointed) out- tljat these were dangerous corners, and that it.should be insisted that the, stands should be erected over the roadside drains, as otherwise they would be an obstruction to the public road. Cr. Parfitt moved that the council offer nb objection fio the erection of the stands provided they were placed on the settlers’ side of the road drains, subject to the engineer’s approval, and to be subject to removal at the request of the council.. This wa.s carried 1 . KAIKAHU ROAD. Mr H. D. Jamieson, Kerepeehi, wrote asking for information concerning the metalling of Kaikahu Road. The clerk’s reply set out the history of the negotiations since the settiers petitioned against -the result of the Kerepeehi riding roads loan. The ►present position was that the metah ling of Kaikahu Road would not, be delayed any longer thin would have been the case had there been no petition. The amount to be expended on it would be equal to the amount authorised on the voting paper a subsidy of £2 for •£1 haying been obtained, and the rate would be Id instead of l%d as pledged at the poH. LICENSES. Applications were received for slaughterhouse licenses from W. G. Hayward, Ngatea ; Adams Bros., Waitakar.uru; W. Wilson, ‘Patetohga ! ; and C. Scott, Turua, and were granted. NOXIOUS WEEDS INSPECTOR. Tlie Director-General, Department of Agriculture, advised, that the matten, of appointing Mr W. White an inspector under the Noxious Weeds Act was receiving consideration. CLERKS’ ASSOCIATION. intimation was received t,ha.t it was proposed to form a Dominion County Clerks’ AsSociatioifi Briefly, the objects of the association were to promote facilities of an educational nature and interchange of ideas, to cooperate with councils in securing, legislative amendments, to promote legislation in regard to superannuation, the employment Of qualified officers. and the issuing of certificates of qualification. The, council was askel to enable its clerk to attend the inaugural meeting, in Wellington.—Granted l . WATER SUPPLY. - - Cr. Harris gave notice of a special meeting of the, council to be held for the purpose of passing special! orders relative to adding .to the Hauraki Plains West water supply district certain areas on. each side of the Ma,ukoto canal. SALE OF QUARRY PLANT. The taiatter of selling the quarrying, plant at Hikutaia was left in the hands of the works committee and the engineer, it being reported that inquiries were being received.
