BREACHES OF BY-LAWS.
Following on the decision of the Paeroa Borough Council to prosecute without warning in cases of offence ago.’list tlie by-laws and the motor regulations, the boteugh inspector, Mr. W. Neil, spent a busy time ojr the ie,venings of July 16. 17, and 1 18, And no less than twelve cyclists were' chai'sed before Mi' F. W. Platts, S.M., at the local Police Court yesterday with tilling bicycles on the,' footpaths, mostly in Ry,e. Lane. Mr C. N. O’Neill appeared for. the Borough Council, and said he did not kish to press for a heavy penalty in any of the eases, but he asked that a tine fie imposed as a steadying Affect. Appearing for a number of the offenders, Mr R. S. Carden said that so far as the Rye- Lane incidents were concerned there, were special circumstances. The road in that locality was in a shocking state of disnepair, and if the' borough was going to use its by-laws for revenue earning purposes it would be very hard on siome people:. Tlie cases were taken together, ami cviiience in each offence wa,s tendered by the traffic inspector. In every case a conviction was entered and the offender ordered to pay. 15s coslts. UNLIGHTED BICYCLES. For riding bicycles without lights after sunset F. Fitch, R. Killgour. S. Liggins, anil A. Moore were each' convicted 1 and ordered to. pay 15s costs. DEFECTIVE BRAKES. Fred Gordon Scott, motOrdniver, TuI’ua, was charged l with driving a motor lorry on June 30 along the main Pae-roa-Netherton road ,a,nd across the Puke traffic bridge without it being equipped with efficient brakes, as required by the Motor Vehicles Act. 1924. He : pleaded guilty. Sergeant Clist,4>aid that the brakes of the’ vehicle xiselees, and as a result a collision with another motor lorry occurred on th)e. bridge. In, evidence defendant stated 1 that he was a farmer at Turua. On the morning of the accident he ha.dl been instructed by his brother to take the lorry and a passenger to the Paeroa railway station. He did not know that the. brakes were defe'etive and would ript hold. Therfe ha,d b'een no occasion to try the brakes out until he got on to the bridge. The magistrate s,a,id that under the ircgulat’ons the breach \vas a serious one. He would enter a conviction arid a tine of £l, together -with £1 16s costs.
