PAEROA-WAIHI ROAD.

THE HIGHWAYS BOARD’S ACTION. POSITION OF WAIHI. At yesterday’s meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council the chairman (Cr. H. M. Corbett) rteferte'd; to the expression of bpinion, given by the Mayor of Waihi (Mm W. M. WaHuutt) ■to the effect that, th'a Waihi BoroughCouncil was entitled to be consulted in connection with the Main, Highways Board taking over the county’s portion of the Pokeno-Wa.ihi main highway. . Concerning the arrangements entered into, with the board for the reconstruction and maintenance of the main road between Paeroa. and Wajh'i, the- chairman stated .that the estimates for the year had to be prepare-i by local bodies for submission to the Main Highways Board through the Public Works Department. The estimates were then approved or altered a.s the board thought fit,a nd once decided upon, the figures became the estimates for the current year. That practice had been followed by the council in. the usual way, but instead of the figures being .accepted, representatives of the Highways Board had consulted th:e. county chairman in connection with the road mentioned, with the result thgt the arrangements had been brought about.

Continuing, the chairman stated that under the- new arrangements tlie Wailii Borough Council would We- required to make an annual contribution of £134 11s Bd. while the county’s annual share would be approximately £BOO. The amount the Waihi Borough Council contributed towards the: road last year amounted to £274 8s 9d', so tliat it could be readily seen, that under tins me-w arrangement made with the Highways Board the borough council would not only ha,ve to pay less than the; amount of last year’s contribution but it would also be afforded a considerable saving. Had not the Highways Board taken over tlie eleven mile-s of road the contribution, requlrie-il from the Waihi Borough would have been an increase on last year’s amount. In conclusion he said that now the county council’s negotiations with tine, board had been confirmed, the Waihi Borough Coun, cil would be officially informed of the contribution it would be required to malte.
