POLAND CUP MATCH. WAIHI V. HAURAK.I PLAINS. Haut’aki Plains lost its first Poland Cup match of the season and Waihi had itsi first; win on Saturday last, when the two teams met. at Ngatea. Although many changes had beep in. the Plains team on account of players not being available’, the fifteen that took th© field were expected to give a good .account of themselves and for the first, half they did. A few moments before' half-time Plains led with the scores, nine to nil, having had the better of the game all along, but after half-time Waihi was much the bettfen team .and fully deserved its win. The game was fast apd interesting. The field was dry and 1 the wind was light. The teams; were as follows : — Plains.—C. Blacklaws, W. Williams, P. Reti, D. Molesworth, J. McPherson. H. Wr’ght, J. Catlin, F. Mulgi-e'w, Kelk. M. Mar.Oin. R. ,C. Abel,. R. Hutchinson, A. Courtney, J. Dobbs, R. Beasley. Waihi.— L. Waihi kicked off, and the Plains forwards rushed to Waihi’s territory. Close play under the posts followed and Dobbs opened the score for Plains, Courtney failed to convent. The pressure was immediately applied again by the Plains forwards, and 1 after a scrum hat’d play ensued in midfield. Waihi failed with a. free! kick, and Molesworth sent play well down the line. From a scrum Hutchinson broke through but was* penalised, and 1 the kick returned play to halfway. An (intercepted, pass allowed Waihi to get away, but Catlin stopped the rush and Molesjworth made a good run. Waihi gained ground on several occasions but lost it again when play became tight. Catlin andMolesworth took play along the line to Waihi’s twentyfive, where a free kick was awarded the defenders;. Plains gained ground in the second quarter by l*ne play. Williams opened up and McPherson carried on. A penalty kick went to Plains, but Blacklaws’ attempt was poor. Abel and Molesworth returned to the corner, and hard play ensued under, the posts. From a scrum Reti secured and passed-'to Williams, who* crossed the line. Blacklaws failed to convert. Plains 6, Wa,ihi 0. Long kicks followed, and from a line-out in Waihi’s twenty-fiye an, opportunity was lost through offside play. Plains, kept up the attack until Catlin took a mark and added three more points. Plains 9, Wajihi 0. After an interchange of kicks McPherson and Williams returned play to midfield, but from close play a Waihi forward, broke away and passed to a team-mate, who carried on but lost the ball on the line. A passing rush by the WJaihi backs saw Garvey cross, the line. Berryman converted*. Plains 9, Waihi 5. On resuming after half-time Molesworth quickly secured and carried to Waihi’s end, where from a, serum on the line a passing rush by Plains broke down and Waihi relieved, and carried on to the other end of the field, Catlin, eventually forcing. Open play followed in neutral territory unt 1! Catlin., followed up a long kick and collared his nraji. Close play terminated with Molesworth kicking to the dead-ball line. In hard pl a y the Waihi forwards gained ground, until Molesworth returned to midfield. Several fine passing rushes by’Waihi resulted. li,n a score before the. changeover. Plains 9, Waihi 8. Hutchinson headed a Plains attack (in the last round, and good work by Molesworth compelled! Waihi to force. Waihi. then gained ground by line play, but Abel and: Kelk returned to midfield. Reti and Catlin* ma.de an opening,, but an opponent marked, only to have his kick scrummed. Offside play gave Plains a kick, but McPherson failed, to score. After a, kicking bout, and from a scrum. very fast, amj wa.s in neutral ground until Wrfight kicked backwards and Molesworth saved by finding the line. Play ranged up and down in .neutital territory, Waihi playing safe until time was up. Mr W. T. Jonas was referee. PLAINS RUGBY UNION. MEETING AT NGATEA. The management committee of the Hauraki Plains Rugby Union met at Ngate.a on Monday evening, Mr. H. Dent presiding over Messi’s s N.'Clay, G. Courtney, C. S. Foster. C. Bertelsen, A. H. McClean, W. Taylor, G. T. Davidson., and W. P- Wylde* (secretary). DENT CUP COMPETITION. Arrangements were made for the playing of the Dent Cup knock-out competition at Ngatea on Saturday next. Waitakanuru was drawn to play Ngatea at 2 p.m. and Kerepeehi to play Turua at 3 p.m. The final will be played at Ngatea on* the following Saturday. The West Club advised that on account, of the* difficulties of transport it could not enter. JUNIOR MATCHES. Mi’ Bertelsen, manager of the junior representative team, reported that he had extended the congratulation of tho union’ to the Waihi Union on winning the Sharebrokers’ Cup competition l , and had also asked that union to endeavour to arrange a return match at Ngatea. on the date of the Poland. Cup match, between Plains and Waihi at Waihi. He anticipated that the Waihi junVors would visit the Plains. Arising out of a communication from the Kerepeehi Club it was agreed that the club- junior teams could play further inter-club games, and it was decided that the draw be the same as in tb.e competition* for the Patetonga Shield* which was recently finished. SCHOOLS' UNION. Mr R. C. Abel, Ngatea School, ad-.-vlsed by letter, that he had attended;

the meeting of the Thames Valley Primary Schools’ Rugby Union, .which body had expressed the wish that the Plains school teachers organise themselves into a school Rugby union similar to those in other Thames Valley centres, and in furtherance of that wish he had .invited the teachers interested to a meeting to be held on Wednesday evening. If such a Union-was formed on the Plains it. could affiliate with the Thames Valley Union and enable the Plains to compete iji the Fleming, Shield competition, and to become eligible to play' for the Northern Roller Mills Shield at Auckland. *Mr, C. Bertelsen wa.s appointed to represent the union at the meeting. . .BIRCH CUP MATCH. The president reported that tentative arrangements had been made to play' Thames at Ngatea on, August 11 Tor, the Birch Cup, and to play a. return match at. Thames on September 22. —Approved. PLAYING* OF MATCHES. The Kerepoehi Club wrote urging the claims of Kerepoehi as a centre for playing, representative matches. It was agreed that the matter should be discussed next season. SUSPENSION APPEALS. Appeals were received from two Turua men against their prohibition, by r the union from attending football matches on the Plains, and it was. decided that the matter be referred, to the Turua Club for favourable consideration. MATCH WITH PUKEKOHE. The president reported that the Pukekohe Union had been advised! that the dates submitted, for home and home matches clashed with fixtures already arranged, but that efforts would lie made to arrange dates later in the season. INSURANCE SCHEME. A lengthy report was sjubmitted by the insiurance committee on; aspects of administering the scheme, and th® union endorsed the committee’s decision, to adhere: rigidly to the rules of the scheme.
