In connection with the Charity Drive that is being held, in Auckland on Saturday next by the Commercial Travellers’ Association, the Northern Steam Ship Company will carry free of charge any contributions that local people- may wish to send.
A middle-aged man, a first, offender, who was charged with drunkenness in Belmont Road yesterday afternoon, appeared before Mr P. E. Bre-nan, J.P., at the local Police Court this morning. Constable Dayson stated that the defendant had been loafing about the town and drinking since Saturday. He had bee-n twice warned by tlie police to move; on. The Bench, in entering a conviction, and fine' of ss. advised defendant to g.o back to hi.s job and keep out of trouble.
A considerable trade in illicit whisky has been- carried on for s-ome time in Southland, and as the result of a search at Awarua Bay yesterday the police, discovered.- an illicit still in a secluded spot. The plant showed that operat’ons had been conducted on an extensive scale. Several large casks of matured liquor, and others in various stages of fermentation, were seized.
Coughs and colds are very prevalent locally at present, and the staffs of various business concerns, have' had members absent from work on account of illness-.
Miss N. J. Monaghan' has been appointed assistant at tlfe Kerepeehi school, in place of Miss M. Fox. she will take up her ‘duties on Augifst 1.
Heavy rain- was recorded locally .throughout Monday,' and. during the night therei was rather a severe electrical storm, the lightning being very vivid at times. There was s,o.me improvement in the' weather, yesterday, and a s ; tiff westerly wind did much towards drying up the stormwater that ■ abounded. Tlie barometer is still unsteady this morning, and the wind has changed round to a more southerly direction-. The immediate prospects for settled weather are not very promis;ing.
In last week’s issue of the New Zealand Gazette eight sections on the Kei’epeehi block (six between the river, and the road, and, two south of the road) arc declared open’for disposal for sale or lease to discharged soldiers under specia’ tenures.
