POLICE COURT.

YESTERDAY’S SITTING AT PAEROA. CASES DEALT WITH. A sitting of the Paeroa Police Court was held yesterday, Mi- S'. L. Paterson, S.M., presiding. DRUNKENNESS. David James Evans, paeroa, wA s convicted and fined £1 and 2s 6d costs for being dr.unk in Belmont Road 1 , Paeroa, on Wednesday evening. James Hedley, labourer, Te A'reha, was charged with drunkenness on the Paeroa-Te Aroha main road on Wednesday afternoon. Sergeant D. L. Cahvell said that accused was regarded as an habitual drunkard, and had been found 1 with methylated spirits in his possessionAt the request of the police an adjournment for one week was granted, defendant to be detained at Thames gaol in the meantime. THEFT OF GUM-BOOTS. Claude Albert. Johnson, labourer, Netherton, was charged with stealing a pair of gum-boots, valued at £1 15s, on June 5, and again on June 24, from the Public Works Department. Accused pleaded guilty to one charge only. Frederick Adrian Johnson, labour, c-r. N.-thcrton. was charged with receiving one pair, of gum-boots, valued at £1 15s, knowing, that they had been stolen, from the Public Works Department, on June 24; He pleaded guilty.

The Bench agreed to take the two cases together. Constable J. McClinchy said that in consequence of complaints received lie called on the accused 1 and found that C. A. Johnson was wearing one pair, of the boots. The brother also admitted that he had worn one pair, and knew that they had been stolen. The accused had not previously been before the- Court, but their conduct was such that they required to be placed under some restraint.

The magistrlate placed both accused on probation under the usual conditions for two years. C. A. Johnson was ordered to make restitution of the boots and pay the. sum of 355, and F. A. Johnson, was ordered to pay £1 5s towards the costs. _
