ATTENDANTS ON TRAINS.
INNOVATION BY DEPARTMENT.
CONVENIENCE OF PASSENGERS.
Backing up. its claim of “safety, comfort, and economy” in travel by trajn, the Railway Department has introduced 1 attendants, neatly unifoinnea, on the expresses of the North Island, and will arrange soon for a similar service on the Christchurch-Invercar-gill line. These attendants are responsible for the tidiness and cleanliness of the carriages a,nd equipment, including lavatories, and their assistance is also available for passengers enter'ng or leaving trains or requiring refreshment during the journey. Th's help is appreciated particularly by women with children, and by elderly men.
In a reference to th’f4 new provision for the comfort .aind convenience of passengers Mr H. H. Sterling, general manager of railways, remarked that it had been necessitated by the development of long-distance travel. The department haa been actively concern, ed for the' comfort of passengers in the past, but it was now recognised that express trains required the service; of attendants, and he was confident that the expenditure would be well justified by results.
