FARM TRACTORS.
SUBJECT TO LICENSE. AMENDMENT TO ACT REQUIRED. During his recent tour through the district Mr A. M. Samuel, M.P., had brought under liis notice ca,ses where farmers possessing tractors 'have, through their generosity ini helping their neighbours, been called! upon to license their tractors the same as oi> (Unary contractors, and were thus debarred from the benefits of the Petrol Tax rebate, although their vehicles arc used for agricultir’al purposes only. Mr Samuel has asked the Minister of Public Works if he will bring down amending legislation to the Motor Vehicles Act, 1924, and the Motor Spirits Taxation Act, 1927, to remedy the present unsatisfactory state of affairs whereby a farmer who is not a contractor, but who may use his tractor to occasionally help his neighbour and who may have to traverse a public road for a short distance in so doing, is not only called upon to pay license fees the same as an ordinary contractor in respect of such tractor, but j.s also debarred’ from a refund of motor spirit taxation in respect of such vehicle.
