During the height of the gale at Te Aroha. op Wednesday misfortune befell ,a woman from Morrinsville who, encountering t'he full force of a terrific gust at the Palace Hotel corner, had her handbag r'pped open and two £5 notes and- £1 worth of silver blown out to the mercy of the wind. The notes; disappeared in the darkness, and the wind rolled t'he silver in all directions. Qn Thursday morning 5s in silver was recovered on one side of the road and 2s 6d on the ether,, but the rest had disappeared completely.
Mr C. L. V. Stewart has beeji appointed substitute assistant at t'he Paeroa District High, School from July 1, in place of Mr Worthington, resigned.
A sale of household furniture, etc., is to take place next Saturday, July 7, commencing at 11.30 a.m., at. t'he residence of Mr, T. Helling, Station Road, Paeroa. Messrs F. Ward and Co. will conduct the sale, full details of which are advertised.
Generally the Hauraki Plains i.s well roaded and transport easy of accomplishment, but there is an exception to these excellent conditions in the south-western area, and the road from Kaihere to Ngatea is in parts impassable in winter, and will continue to be so for a year or so, until the metalling is finished. For some time past the member for t'he district has been urging upon the Government the great need for establishing a temporary ferry on the Piako River to enable the Kaihere settlers to get out through Kerepeehi, and there is every prospect of this being given effect to in the near, future. The chief drainage engineer has been authorised t.o go into the question of establishing a temporary ferry to provide a crossing over the Piako River near the Kaihere landing, and to arrange with t'he County Council to control it.
The N.Z. Meat Producers’ Board lias received a cable from its representative at Buenos Aires. Slouth America, advising the following; shipments to the United Kingdom for. the fortnight ended June 21, 1928, from Argentine and Uruguay : 277,250' quarters of chilled beef, 1570 quarters of frozen beef, 60,132 carcases of frozen mutton, and 46,732 carcases of frozen lamb. The quantity shipped to the Continent of Europe during the same period was as follows : 13,646 quarters of frozen beef, 2550 carcases of frozen mutton, and 251 carcases; of frozen lamb.
