During the playing of the Paeroa v. Thames Rugby match at Paeroa on Saturday the lengthy kicks put in by the visiting full-b'Ack, W. Winder, were very spectacular. During the flight of (he ball after such a kick a visitor from Thames, and a member of that union, clrew attention to the distance the ball was travelling. “Yes,” remarked a Paeroa supporter who was standing behind the Thames'it.e, “it will land just about where the Paeroa hospital is going,.” The smiles of tire P.aeroa people who heard the retort were worth seeing. One of the Auckland directors of the Rising, Sun Gold Mining Co. wlio attended the Chamber of Commercemeeting on Thursday night is evidently a keen “observer.” Noting the flags of all nations that adorn the walls of tlie Ohinemuri County Chambers, he remarked that it was probably a coincident that he sjfiould have taken his seat, facing .the national flag of Japan, which, he pointed out, denoted the sun’s rays or “Tlie Rising •Sun.” A mean act was committed during tihe holding of the Plunket Society’s dance at tlie Gaiety Theatre oh Thursday evening. A number of kewpies attached to a centre-piece and suspended from tiie ceiling formed apart of the decorative scheme. Although well out of reach of dancers, some person or persons with a perverted sense of humour stole three of the dolls, including a particularly large kewpie that had been lo.a.ned by a little girl.
One of the speakers at the Chamber of Commerce meeting on Thursday night, becoming interested in his subject, referred to Mr A. M. Samuel, *M.P., as the Hon. Mr Samuel. Observing the smiles that went round the room he ’realised his mistake, and caused further amusement by adding, “Oh, well/he w iU darned soon be the Honourable- A. M. Samuel, Minister of ■Mines.” 1 "
An unrehearsed incident happened at the local domain on Saturday afternoon. Included in the smiting accommodation provided were a number of fonmis, one of which, was. closely occupied by a number of ladies.. Room was being made to admit of still another person, when the form collapsed with a crack. After the la,ugh had subsided And the- occupiers had suited themselves out, the form was turned on its side and still used to s;it upon.
An encounter between a man and a ma.ddened bullock o,n a road near National Park last week had a remarkable coclusion. .Two Taumarunui drovers. Messrs. D. Meredith and; W. E. Brightwell, were taking .160 hillocks by road from Taumarunui to Taihape and 11 miles from Owhango had stopped by the roadside for, a spell, when one of the bullocks wandered from the 'herd in search, of water. Fearing it might go too far, ■Mr Meredith went after it on foot with a whip, and was endeavouring to turn! the animal back when it charged. The man was knocked down in the first rush, and at the s-ame moment the bullock caught its head in the ground and turned a complete somersault, pinning tlie man underneath. Hearing cries for help. Mr Brigiitwcll hurried anifl assisted his companion to rise by raising' the aI! '" mat by tlie legs. Mr Meredith was unhurt, but the bullock was found, on examination, to be dead, its neck liaving been broken. It was a-prime beast, weighing 15001bS.

Wintry weather conditions, continue to prevail locally, although a fairly fine week-end was recorded. There was a very heavy frost on Friday morning, and a day of bright sunshine followed- On Saturday morning there was a light frost, but althoug.h no rain was recorded the sky was overcast for the greater part of the day. Yesterday was fine and sunshiny up to .about 4 p.m., when there was a heavy shower of rain .accompanied by a stiff southerly wind. There were several showers during the night, and conditions to-day are damp and cold. Advice has been received by the Thames Valley Rugby Union from the Bush District Union, Pa'hiatua, that ewing to the difficulty of getting a sufficient number of players to travel the match .which was to have been played against Thajuea Valley at Te Aroha on July 18 has been cancelled. 11l reply to a. deputation of business men who waited upon him as Thames on Wednesday' last Mr E. O. Casey, railway superintendent, stated that business had to justify the maintenance of officered railway stations,, and so far a. s Thames (Grahamstown) w.as£ concerned the position was indefensible, especially when it was Considered that the aver, age number of passengers per train from that station was less than four. In conclusion Mr Casey said he could not honestly see that there w.as sufficient business offering to warrant the retention of Thames as an officered station.
