WORKS IN THE BOROUGH

OPERATIONS DURING THE MONTH. MOMMITTEE’S REPORT. The following report was submitted to the Paeroa. Borough Council meeting on Thursday evening by the Works Committee :— “Since the last meeting work has been generally pushed on, and .a fair number of men have been employed“Puke Road Culvert.—This job has been concentrated upon and advantage taken, of a few days of fine weather. The concrete deck was finished on Saturday, the 9th inst., and a few days’ tine weather after the first week in July will, enable the street to be open, for traffic again. “Street Improvements.—Buchanan Street has been formed and secondclass metal carted ready for spreading and rolling as soon as weather conditions are favourable. “The gully in Rusnell Street between Willoughby Street has been metalled with second-class metal. “Formation work has proceeded when weather has been suitable in Willoughby and Thorp streets, where filling continues; to be carted by the Public Works Department. The work ip the vicinity of the Public Works Department’s office hais: been completed, and four chains of Normanby Road seal-coated. “Maintenance. —Substantial repairs have been carried out to Coronation Road and Opukeko Road, and secondclass metal has been spread in the low-lying portion of Wood Street. Station, Road has been patched, and a few of the worst footpaths have received attention. “Drainage.—A 9in drain w'hich nuns from the northern side of Normanby Road at Thorp Street intersection and along Thorp Street to and along part of Fraser Street to the river on the town Side of the first cottage in Fraser Street, and which, as fa,r as Normanby road is, concerned, has never functioned since the borough was formed, is being opened up and cleaned out. It is a few inches lower than the main dr,a,in invert at its head at Thorp Street, .and its functioning will provide further improvement to the stormwater drainage of this area,. “It is proposed to have the Wharf Street stormwater drain opened up and cleaned out during the coming month. “Owing to the reduced amount of maintenance and maintenance money now that the main highways have been bituminised, and the fact that work done on them must be done in the summer, it is necessary to reducethe staff to four men and the foreman. the final retrenchment taking effect on Saturday next. It is greatly regretted that this step adds to the already serious number of unemployed. “•Main Highways—The estimates for the current financial year have been prepared .and forwarded to the Highway's: Board. They are attached hereto, and we ask for their approval. They provide for a final seal coat during next summer which, if given, will complete our work and give a, reasonable freedom from expenditure for several years. An examination shows that the streets are standing well and give every promise of being quite a success.”
