LOCAL UNEMPLOYMENT.

ACTION BY BOROUGH COUNCIL. PROGRAMME OF RELIEF WORKSAt the meeting of the Paeroa Borough Council last night the Mayor (Mr W. .Marshall), after referring to the unemployment question in Paeroa, moved : “That for the purpose of providing relief for the unemployed, and subject to obtaning Government subsidy on the amount expended in wages at the relief rate of pay, the sum of £250 be voted Ifrom the Walter Account and the sum of £2OO from the Ngaliiina Wharf Account, and the public be requested to contribute to a relief of unemployment fund.” It was also moved by the Mayor, and seconded by Cr. Edwards, that out of the above funds the following relief works be carried out: Completion as far as possible of the children’s playground and' the fitting of such playground for such purpose; planting of further area of trees on the Range Street reserve ; clear, ing and ploughing of the Bennett Street reserve ; improving and beautifying and planting the streets of the borough ; fencing the Rawhiti reserve ; formation, of Seth Street; reconstruction of Rye Land a.nd Prospect Terrace, including construction o£ culvert or bridge over main drain ; and generally maintain the above works, streets, drains, and other improvements in the borough and keep the same efficient and clean : all the above works to be carried out so far as the money available for such purposes \rill extend, provided that four permanent hands and the foreman continue to be employed on the ordinary programme, as per annual estimates, at the usual rate, of pay.—Carried.

It was then moved by the Mayor . “That authority be issued to engage men as soon as the preliminaries can be completed, subject to the following conditions: That immediate preference be given to local married men ; th,at for the present only focal men be employed; that the relief work rate of wages be 12s for married men and 9s for single.” Seconded by Cr. Edwards ;and carriled.

A further resolution was carried requesting the works committee to treat the matter as. urgent.
