VALUATION ASSESSORS.

■O ■ . RATEPAYERS’ NOMINATIONS. HAURAKI PLAINS COUNTY. Two Hauraki Plains county ratepayers, Messrs H. Mills, of Netherton, and A. J. Whiteside, of Thames and Patetonga., have been nominated for the position of Landowners’ assessor on the Land Valuation Assessment Court. In accordance with the re. ccntly gazetted regulations, an election wild now have to be conducted at a public meeting called for the purpose by the county clerk. This meeting will be- held in Ngatea. a.t 1.-30 p.m. on Wednesday next, and only bona fide ratepayers will, be entitled to vote. Objections to the valuation of land are heard by an Assessment Court coinpris'ng a magistrate as chairman and two assessors. Hitherto one assessor was appointed by the Government and the other by the county council. It was contended that this constitution was, against the interests of the landowners, as the State’s nominee was interested in upholding the valuation made by the Government valuer and the county council’s nominee wa.s possibly interestedi in securing a high valuation for the local bodies to rate- Under the new regulations the county council appo’nts the landowners’ assessor, but. he is direct; ly chosen by the ratepayers concerned.

Mr H. Mills is a farmer who has had wide ‘local body experience, having represented the Hauraki Plains when part of it was in the Thames, County. Mr A. J. Whiteside w',ll be remembered as having contested the Thames scat for Parliament at tlie last general election. He has announced his intention of again standing for the Thames scat. He formed the Thames Ratepayers’ Association, and was elected as its candidate on the Thames Borough Councigl. OHINEMURI COUNTY. At yesterday’s meeting of theOhinemuri County Council the clerk reported that no nominations; had been received for an assessor for the county, it would therefore be the duty of the council to make its own appointment

On. the motion of Cr. W. F. Johnstone Mr G. Buchanan, of Paeroa, was appointed for a term of three years.
