A young man, aged 24 years, and a iirst offender, was charged at the local Police Court, before Mr H. J. Hare, J.P., yesterday morning, with being found in a-drunken state in a railway carriage at the Paeroa railway station on Wednesday night. Constable -McClinchy stated that in response to a message from the stationmaster, defendant wag. arrested, and released on ba'l of £.l yesterday morning. A conviction was : entered, and forfeiture of the, bail was ordered 1 .
After investigations lasting all day John Horace James Johnson, farmer, Netherton (Mr J. J. Sullivan) at the Paeroa Police Court on Wednesday, pleaded l not guilty to five charges of incest. After a brief retineiment Messrs W- Marshall and W. F. North, J’s.P., decided that Johnson should be committed to the Supreme Court for, trial. Bail was allowed in himself £5OO, and two sureties of £250 eiacli.
Owing to the fact that the Matamata Ladies’ Hockey Club has withdrawn from the Piako Association compet'tion, the match Paeroja, vMatamata, which was to have been played at Ta Aroha to-morrow, automatically lapses. The local, team will now play a practice game with tliq newly formed B team at the domain, commencing at 2.4'5 p.ni. The Hamilton association proposes holding a six-aside tournament at Hamilton on Monday, June 4, and the matter of entering either, a team from Paeroa or a Te Aroha-Pae.roa combined team is now under consideration.
The Railway Department purposes again to run a, special train to Hamilton on Friday, June 1, to enable the people of Paeroa to visit the Waikato Winter Show. The prospects of this year promise a magnificently successful display. The entries have broken all records, and the trade exhibits are as varied as they are numerous. Nor has tlie lighter side Qf life been forgotten—the Show stands- in the- van- of progress, yet forms a link with the old-time gaiety of the. English Fair,. An imposing programme of events for the entertainment of visitors has been, drawn up, and this year special excursions are being run from the North of Auckland and from Wellington and Taranaki. It is ; hoped that the excursion train from Paeroa will be well patronised by adults as wel,l a.s by the school .children.
The railway department draws attention in to-day’s paper to the issue of holiday excursion tickets, etc., in connection with the King’s Birthday.
