HOCKEY.

LAST SATURDAY’S GAME. THAMES DEFEATS- PAEROA. On Saturday afternoon the Thames Old Girls’ hockey team defeated the Paeroa ladies? team at Paeroa by 8 goals to 0. Three goals were netted' before half-time. For thq visitors goals were shot by Misses Boyle (4), Gordon (2), Griffin, a ; nd Willetts. The Rev. Weadon (Paeroa) and Mr Brownlie (Thames) were referees. The home side was, hopelessly outclassed by the visitors, who played with splendid combinatioti -apd hit hard and fearlessly. The star player was the Thames captain, Miss, Boyle, who played splendid hockey throughout and handled her team with, judgment, and lost no opportuhuity to keep Paeroa, on the defensive. The visitors were by far the heavier team, and each player fielded the ball cleanly, and in. clearing or, attacking hit hard. Although the defeat was decisive, the home side was by no means disgraced. Where the team lost opportunities was in the failure to hit ha.rd and quickly, and the feeble attempts made by some of the players when attacking. That the services o£ a coach aj/i badly needed was evidenced, in way several of the players failed to keep their positions on the field, and crowding at times lost the opportunity to turn defence into a.ttack. The ipcal goal-keeper, Miss P. Treanor, had a hard time, and the way she stood up to the stinging shots sent into the net evoked applause from the spectators. Of the; halfbacks Miss E. Bell did a lot of work, and was ;a.bly supported by Miss B. Gibb. The pick of the forwards was •Miss V. Shand, who was alive to the tactics of the visitors, and made several fine individual effoirts to score for her. side. For a young player Miss P. Pivott showed out prominently, and, in. addition to being nippy, played with judgment. At the conclusion of the match the visitors were entertained at afternoon tea at the residence of Mrs, H. M. .Shand'.
