COUNTY CHAIRMEN.

OHINEMURI COUNTY COUNCIL.

MR.. H. M. CORBETT RE-ELECTED.

The annual statutory meetings for the election of chairman of county councils were held at midLday to-day. At the meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council the clerk, Mr R. W. Evans,, took the chair and called for. nominations.

The retiring chairman!, Cr. H. MCorbett, was proposed by Cr. W- F. Johnstone and seconded by Cr J- B. Morris.

There being no further nominations, Cr. Corbett was declared duly ejected chairman for the ensuing twelve months, and took his seat amid applause.

In asknowledging the unanimous, vote Cr. Corbett returned, thanks for his re-election to the position, and said ho very much appreciated the confidence placed in him. He thanked the councillors for the support they had given him during the P as *- year of office. He saw, as time went onl, tha.t. the position carried with it greater responsibility. The roading question, due to the, growing motor traffic, was. a difficult proposition today. While the ratepayers cried out to keep their rates down the motorist was insisting on better rojads. A big effort would have to be made this year to improve the rqa.ds. So far, there had not been much assistance from the tax on motor; spirit, but it would eventually come. It was ~the intention of the council to spend the £lOOO recently received in purchasing machinery. This machinery would have to be kept going, and to} do that the council would have to got busy a;nd plan off what work was to be done.

” The matter of the Ohinemuri, Thames, and Coromandel County Councils amalgamating would probably be discussed in the near futuure, continued Cr- Corbett. It had already been discussed in official circles. He mentioned. it n'ow because it would ha.ve to be seriously considered 1 by the ratepayers. Mr Corbett thanked the staff for their co-operation ,in the office, and said he 'hoped' that he would finish his year’s term as chairman to the satisfaction of all. HAURAKI PLAINS’ COUNCIL. MR. E. L. WALTON RE-ELECTED. At the statutory meeting o>£ the Hauraki Plains County Council to-dhy Cr. E. L. Walto|n, on the motion of Crs. Parfitt and Harris, was unanimously re-elected chairman. Every councillor spoke in support of the nomination.
