BOROUGH WORKS.

REPORT BY COMMITTEE. PROGRESS DURING MONTH, The, 'following report was submitted by the Works Committee to the Pa.e’ roa Borough Council meeting last Thursday:—■ “Owing to unfavourable weather conditions work on the new culvert at Pukei Road has been entirely held up, and W further bitumen work has also been impossible for the same reason, DRAINAGE. “The main outfa.ll. drain has been thoroughly cleaned from the river to King Street, and a good job has. been made. Observations made during the recent heavy rains have demon strated the value of the recent stormwater drainage improvements. The dra.in which discha’"ges at the Ohinemuri bridge, was- discharging at it full capacity for over s'x hours before there was any discharge at the main outfall flood-gate. This is due to the ißiver falling more quickly at the bridge.

“The 21in pipes which were remove.d from the sa.leya, rds drain have been laid in upper Normanby Road. Part of the' large drain is being filled in with spoil from the, new bridge. If another 25 pipes were secured this large pipe drain wouildj be complete from its ultimate head, and it could be filled in. without cost at the present time.

“An 18in culvert has been laid in Willoughby Street a.t its north-west intersection with Thorp Street, and a 15in culvert in, Thorp street at its north-east intersection with Willoughby Street, and the drain continued to the back df, the Wood' Street municipal .reserve. This drain, has been dug as low as the main drain in Normanby Roa.d would permit, and thei result will be a very great improvement to the, drainage of the lowlying portions in this ; area.

“The spoil frilm the river cutting under the bridge is being’ carte;! by the Public Wor;ks. Department’s contractor to Thorp and Willoughby streets, as previously arranged, an’d. the cutting required is being done by the borough staff, so that when the fillings are in these streets: will, be formed.

“Russell Street from 'Willoughby Street to WOod Street has been raised to a permanent level, a,pd it is proposed to metal the filling with secondclassi metal. A commencement has algo been made with the formation of Bush Street with a view to metalling with similar; material. “Concrete kerbing has been laid on the tw'o sides of the 'Public Works building and the footpaths formed, and a kerb laid for the length ■of the full-width bituminised street near, Mr Robson’s. Portion of Johnson Street, leading to the butter factory, has been scarified ajid improved. Arrangements have been made for a supply of metal to repair Corpnation Street.

“Owing to work being stopped on the new culvert, and the bituminising oif streets, the sitaff has been reduces! to six men and the foreman. Owing to the limited amount available, fo‘T public works, now that the main highways have been bituminised, it will be necessary to still further reduce hands unless the culvort ca,n be proceeded with.”
