Physical Training 3, v. Turua ■)• THIRD-GRADE. West 30, v. East 0. The Paeroa Rugby Union’s cbjnpetltion was. continued on Saturday afternoon. The weather wias fine, with a fairly stiff south-easterly wind blowing. There was a large attendance of spectators ) who found plenty to interest them in the two seinior matches. Probably the greater interest was ta.ken in the game between the two J ( ocal teams, Wes ; t and East, and there were plenty of supporters for, both teams. The match proved to be a very one-sided one, the combination and general play of the- West backs completely demoralising the opposing side, and their victory by 28 to 3 was well deserved. Taylor kicked off for West, the ball going out in East’s twenty-five. Several linq-outs followed and then Lewis gained possession and passed to Swann, who scored near, the corner. Taylor failed to convert. West 3, East 0. From a scrum in We.st’s territory Masters secured and sent out to Lewis, to Swann, to McQuarters, who lost the» ba.ll near the line, a force resulting. Keeping up the pressure. West again carried play infc) East’s territory, and following a scramble Verran scored in the corner. Swann) Hailed with the kick. West 6, East 0. Weist again attacked, but HMoore cleared from a mark. Play swung to the other end of the, field, and after tight play West forced. E. Moore, with a penalty kick from .near thei halfway line, opened East’s score. West 6, East 3.
In the. second quarter, the opening kick was scrummed. Masters worked the blind side and sent to Lewis, to Swann, to McQuarters, who scored an easy try. Taylor, failed with the kick. West 9, East 3. Taylor broke away from a line-out and made a du,sh for the line, but WW.kinsdn tackled well. .N. Neil headed, a looise tush, but Wilton failed to take a pass and Fraser cleared. Dudley received from a line-out near the halfway flag and made a good r.un, but lost the baH,l at the corner. The lineout was scrummed and Johnson kicked up the field for E. Moore to carry ■on, but the, ball, went out in West’s twenty-five. Sout'hby and Poland came down the. field, but Liggins intercepted a pass and cleared to halfway. ,
On resuming after, half-time Taini replaced Roya.l. The West forwards indulged in a loose rush, but received a temporary check by a scrum being ordered. Masters sent Dudley away, and Swann and Verran handled the ball, the latter returning to Swann, who was pulled up for, a breach. In tight play Tayi.or picked l up and passed to Poland, who scored a good try. Swann failed to convert. West 12, East 3. Fitch retired and wa.s replaced by T'regoweth. East set up a loose rush, in which Treanor and Johnson were prominent, but Masters marked and found the line. In the final quarter Swann broke away and transferred to McQuarters, who dummied twice, beating three opponents to score a- fine try. Taylor’s kick was unsuccessful. West 15, East 3. Knight led the West forward in a rush, and when Wilkinson mulled the ballj Knight got in a hayd kick over the line for Southby to score. Swann converted. West 20, East 3. H. MP,orc retired. West continued to press anld McQuarters. sent the ball over the line for Wilkinson to force. Swann received from the d!rop-out and put East on the defensive. A number of scrums- then eventuated on East’s line, until, Franks relieved with a line kick. In loose play Nield opened up for, West, ayd' after the ball, had travelled: through several hands, Verran took a long pass and, running round the field, scored between the posts. Swann failed to convert. West 23. East 3. East then attacked, but Poland ;and Knight broke away, and Knight, gathering the ball in, outpaced: his opponents and scored between the posts. Taylor converted. West 28, East 3. Mr E. Smith was referee.
THAMES VALLEY UNION.
MEETING AT PAEROA. The Thames Valley Rugby Union, •met at Paeroa on Saturday evening, the president, Mr J. W. Sileock, presiding over Messrs. H. M. Shand 1 (Referees’ Association), H. Mullins, S. J. Walmsley, and W. Pauli (Waihi), W. Madgwick, H. Dent, and C. S. -Foster, (Hauraki Plains), M. Crosby, W. P. PenneiH, and K. L. Slyfield (Paeroa), W. C. Kennedy and P. Heathcote (Te Aroha), and the secretary, ■Mr W. D. Nicholas. KA.RANGAHAKE PLAYERS. A letter was received from the Paeroa Rugby Union concerning three Karahgahake players who were playing for the Waihi Union. Mr Pennell said that the Waihi Union 'ha.d been advised that these players- were resident in Kar.angahake. Mr Mullins stated that he had written to the Paeroa Union on the matter. Mr Walmsley said that Rackham arid Lee were now resident in the Waihi district. O’Brien was in Knrangahake, and had not played since
the position had been pointed out after the first match. Mr Pennell said that the Paeroa Union had ma.de investigations and had found that Lee and Rackham were in the Paeroa area.
The president said that the matter should be amicably settled between, the two unions.
Mr Pennell said that the matter was only brought up on principle. The boundaries were fixed, and if the Karangahakc players were permitted to play for another union a precedent would be established and Netherton players would use it in an endeavour to get permission to play for Hauraki Plains. Mr Mullins urged that the boiunr daries' of all the s : ub-unions be fixed. The cha'rman pointed out that they were definitely fixed. On the motion of the chairman the matter was referred back to the two sub-unions. REINSTATEMENT OF PLAYERS. The Paeroa Rugby Union wrote applying for the reinstatement of J. Lewis and W. J. Glasgow. The secretary reported that the applications, together with the necessary declarations, had been forwarded to; the N.Z. Rugby Union, and the reinstatement had been approved. AFFILIATION OF THAMES. In replying to a letter from the Thames Va.lley Union asking for, a round-table conference to discuss the matter of the two unions affiliating, the Thames Union stated that as it had r.eaffiliated with the Auckland Rugby Union it regeretted that no action could be taken this yea.r.
A report published in the Thames paper adversely criticising the Thames Valley Union was referred to by Mr W. C. Kennedy, who said that lie had been advised by Mr W. Danby that the reported statement did not convey the correct impression. The president stated that the secretary had written to the Thapres Union, which had replied., that the remarks concerning the finances of the union had been too liter, ally interpreted. ' . Continuing, Mr Sileock said that he had always hoped that bhe Thames Union would affiliate with Thajnes Valley. The Thames Union came into the. Thames Valley to play and Thames Valley teams went to Thames. ■Mr Madgwick said tha.t there was a considerable bqcfy of opinion in Thames in favour of union. Mr Kennedy asked what action d’d the sub-unions propose taking in regard to playing Thames. The president stated that when the matter came, up a(l the sub-unions naturally felt annoyed, and he understood that they had deferred decision. pointed out that the Haur r.aki Plains Union had not discussed the matter at all. •Mr Foster was of the; opinion that all submnions shoul,d decide, not to challenge Thames this season. It would tend to bring about a union. Mr Mullins said that Thames should have been made part of the Thames ValUey when that union wa.s formed.. The letters were received. OFFICERS. Mr H. Poland wrote accepting the office of patron, and Dr. W. L. Lawrence and Mr F. Lockyer wrote accepting the office of delegates to the N-Z. Rugby Union. GENERAL. The Piako Rugby Union was grant' cd permission to'play Matamata, on June 4, and Waihi was granted permission to play Tauranga on the same dhte. The action of the Te. Aroha subunion in lifting the disqualification of O. H. Cleave was approved. INTER-UNION MATCHES. The delegate to the N.Z. Rugby Union, Mr F. Lockyer, wrote advising that on account of illness he was not able, to be present, but enclosed a lengthy report of the business, done at the annual meeting of the union. The report was accepted, and a motion of sympa.thy with Mr Lockyer in his illness was carried. REPRESENTATIVE MATCHES. Tlie president stated that the Taranaki and Wanganui unions had been Written to for matches. The Bush Union wrote tentatively accepting July 18 at Te Aroha. The offer, was accepted, and the president was appointed manager of the team. The Auckland Union wrote suggesting a match in Auckland. It was decided .to ask the Auckland Union to submit a date for a match in! Auckland and for a match in. return. The South Auckland sub-union wrote suggesting a match on a Wednesday or a Thursday. It was decided not to play the sub' union, but to refer it to a. sub-union for consideration, and the- Hauraki Plains sub-union was accepted. It was decided to ask. the .Bay of Pll,e»ty Union for p match at Waihi I this year. . I A letter was received from tlie Tauranga Rugby Union asking fojr a match at Tauranga. As Tauranga is a sub-union, it was decided to hand over the. letter to the Paeroa Rugby Union. POLAND CUP. It was decided, that the Poland Cup competition would commence on June 16. The draw resulted as follows :— June 16. — Piako at Waihi, referee •Mr E. Smith ; Pa.eroa at Plains, referee, Mr T. Turner. June 30. —Waihi at Paeroa, referee Mr J. Reed ; Plains at Piakoj, referee Mr A. W. Dunstan. July 14, Waihi at Plains, referee, Mr W. T. Jonas ; Piako at Paeroa, referee, Mr N. Emmett. In the second round the games will be reversed. SHAREBROKERS’ CUP. Mr Dent urged that this competition be payed in two rounds as a •means of encouraging the junior players. The Waihi delegates objected to two rounds on the score of finance. The chairman said that the decision Qf the annual meeting could not be altered, but there, was nothing to prevent matches being arranged, mutual I }' between the sub-unions. The president moved that the matches be played on the, same date and draw as the Poland Cup games,
but ;a.t opposite places.—Carried. Tlie matches will thus be : June 16: Waihi at Piako, Plains at Paeroa; June 39, Paeroa at Waihi. Piako at Plains ; July 14, Plains at Waihi, Pa.eroa at Piako. REFEREES. The following refeie.es will be recommended to the N.Z. Rugby Union as competent to control representative matches: Messrs A. W. Dunstan,. T. Turner, E. Smith, J. L. V. Reed, and N. Emmett. SELECTORS. The following selectors for the Thames Valley representatives were nominated by the sub-unions.: Messrs C. Dillamore, D. G. McMillan.. F. Goldsbury, and E. Edwards. SELECTING RESERVES. Mr W. Pauli said he did not think that th® present method of selecting reserves was satisfactory. Last year one player had been picked twice but could not play. Word was the.n sent to the second reserve to get ready, and just as he was leaving Waihi was wiied to that the first reserve was ali’e to accompany the team. He thought that the selectors should ascertain before selecting the team if the men couhl play. Tlie chairman said that the circumstance related was unfortunate, but he agreed with Mr PauilJ. It was resolved to ask the selectors to ascertain before selecting the team if the men wore available for the game.
