AWAITI SUBSIDIES. The Minister for Lands, the Hon. A • D. McLeod, wrote with reference to the council’s request for consideration of the payment of a subsidy on a £2 for £1 basis on the Awaiti BIQCk road on the Crown settlement metalled last year, and also in regardi to the Ngararahi stopbank road, me Minister advised that it appeared 2 that the Crown had already, given " very liberal assistance to these works. Hfi-understood that the Public Works JBartment had provided £2BOO on a £ for £ basis for metalling the roads of the Awaiti block. There were approximately 400 chains of roads, but the Public Works Department had already, metalled 185 chains without cost to the settlers, in addition to which it had contributed towank the co£t of metalling the road connection between the settlement and the Netherton wharf. 1 The Ngararahi stop-bank road, continued the letter, was not bounded bj a Crown settlement, as it-was entirely outside the Hauraki plains rating area. The Public Works Department had proviled a subsidy of £l2OO foi. , metalling this road, and his department could not entertain an increase--1 in respect to the Awaiti block roads, it woifld be seen, that through the work already carried out the depai - ment had provided practically the equivalent of a £ for £ subsidy, and in vidw of the assistance beihg granted by the Public Works Department was - not prepared to favourably entertain any provision for increase in that department’s subsidy. Cr. Reid said he failed to see why the Crown tenants of that area should not receive treatment similar to other Crown settlers. The Ngararahi stop- | bank r.oad settlers were not Crown | tenants, but the land.on one side was all Crown land. SPECIAL COMMITTEE. The chairman, clerk, engineer, and Patetonga riding member were conr* s V’ s titutedj a committee to deal with the I threatened legail action by a Patetonga settler for. payment for gravel.
