Fine weather prevailed on Saturday afternoon, and there was a large attendance of the public at the local domain to witness the second matches of the Paeroa- Rfigby Union’s senior competition The fields weje in splendid playing: condition, t'he raip of the previous day having taken the sting cut of the ground while. the good solo of grass prevented mud working through. The spectators were treated to an interesting period of Rugby, there being two senior games played at the same time. The newly formed Pirates team was seen in action for the first time, and it created a favourable impression. Although the scores were 21 to 6 in favour, of West, they d'o not indicate the ‘rue merit of the play or the interesting contest that was witnessed. Ry itp combination, especially among the backs, West secured its victory, but all the same the black and whites did not have matters all their own .way as the scores might indicate. Tight play followed in front of the posts, and from a scrum the ball Shot out to Dudley, who scored near the posts. Swann converted. West 5, Pirates 0. Up and down play followed fo • some time, until Poland carried plav into Pirates’ twenty-five. From a scrum shortly afterwards the ball shot out to Sweeney, to Masters, to Swanin, who beat th© full-back and 1 scored a good try. His Jack was unsuccessful. West 8, Pirates 0. From the kick-out Goonan carried up, and tight play followed on West’s line. Faulty passing by the Pirates backs resulted ip a five-yards scrum, from, which Dudley cleared to halfway. In loose play just outside West’s twenty-five a breach occurred among the black and forwards and McCarroli kicked Wfine goal. West 8, Pirates 3. In the second quarter l play was very evdn until a scrum was ordered near the, halfway line. Masters worked the blind! side and sent but to Veri ran, to Poland, who made a fine corlc-

screw run and scored near the. corner. Swaim failed to convert. West 11, Pirates 3. On resuming after half-time West attacked and compelled a force. In a loose rush the Pirates forward's carried up the field and Goon,an scored a gbod try. McCarroll failed with the kick. West I’l, Pirates 6. In tight play Lockett was caught offside, but Swann failed with the kick. The, fiiiail quarter opened with a passing rush between Frost and Coldlcutt, who carried play into West’s twenty-five. Poland secured in the loose, and after making a good run passed to Swann, who carried bn apd then passed to Wells tor him to score an easy try. Swann failed to convert. West 14, Pirates 6. A succession of. long kicks terminated in a loose rush by West headed by Masters and Poland, and in tight play near the line Lewis gathered in the ball and dived over the> line. Swann failed with the kick. West 17, Pirates 6. From the kick-out Pirates essayed a passing rush and put West on the defensive.. Swann relieving with a kick to the halfway flag. A breach in the scrum which followed gave McCarroll an uir successful kick at goal. In the closing Ptages of the game Swann saw an opening and drop-kicked a beautiful goal from near the liailifway linp, and shortly afterwards the game ended in Pirates territory with the scores West 21, Pirates 6. Mr E. Smith was . referee. SUBURBS V. EAST. Considerable interest was taken in this game, which was late ip starting. Despite the fact that East took the field with eleven men, but later filled three of the vacancies, it gave a very good account of itself, and at the commencement of the last quarter the scores were 8 all. East followed up the kick-off until a Suburbs player committed a breach and ghve .Moore an .unsuccessful shot nt goal. Near halfway a scrum was Wclerfed. from which thei Suburbs backs carried play into East’s territory, prom where W. Bennett Sjebred an easy try, which was converted by Mcßae. Suburbs 5, East 0. Commencing the second' round, Neil carriqd play into the visitors’ twentyfive ahd in a loose rush Johijsoni gained possession and scored a good try, which was converted by Grant. Suburbs 5, East 5- From the. kick-out the Suburbs forwards indulged in a rush, but Latimer relieved the pressure by marking in front of the posts. Boyer, returned the kick and Rare, by fol 4 lowing up well, gained possession and

diveid over the line. Mcßae failed to convert. Suburbs 8, East 5.

<On resuming after half-time there Was a period of up and down play. From a free kick near halfway East essayed a forward rush headed by Neil and Latimer, and play .was trans-, furred to suburbs’ twenty-five, where the attackers were awarded a penalty kick which Latimer converted. Suburbs 8, East 8.

In the last quarter play was fast and open, neither side gaining much permanent advantage. In. the closing stages oft he game the Suburbs for-? wards showed a flash of combination which terminated in A. Morrison scor-. ing a good try. Mcßae’s kick was unsuccessful, and the. game ended Suburbs 11, East 8. Mi; Jonas was referee. THE CURTAINRAISER. As a curtain-raiser to the senior games the East and West third-grade teams played- a match. It was a fast and even contest, and resulted in! a win. for West by three points to nil. Vercoe scoring a try. Mr J. Verran was referee.
