FEWER IMMIGRANTS.

RESTRICTIONS! EXTENDED.

IN FORCE UNTIL END iQF YEAR

WELLINGTON, April 1

A further extension of the existing restrictions on immigration to New Zealand has been decided upon by the Cabinet, the expiry date being moved forward to the e.nd of the present year. The results of the restriction policy .since its adoption reveal a substantial decrease in the number of aiHivals.

On account of the economic situation the flow of immigration was first restricted last year, the restrictions being imposed in London at the beginning of last April, and actually affecting airrivals here aS. from the following month. Under the new policy migrants were confined to domestics and separated families. Juveniles brought out under the Flock House, Salvation Army, and Church of England schemes were not affected. It was intended that the .restrictions should last until last October, but on the expiry date it w r as considered expedient to extend them until December 31. A further extension was then decided upon, until March 31, 1928The High Commissioner for New Zealand in London, Si'i: James Parr, has now been advised that the qestrictioiis will remain in force until the cud. of 1928. / An illustration of the fact that tlie Government is sincere in its immigration restriction policy,. and that thq policy has been carried out, is provided by the shrinkage in tlie number of arrivals since the inauguration of the policy. From last May up to the end of tha financial year (yesterday) the arrivals showed a decrease of 72 per cent, ove'r, last year’s) figures.
