OHINEMURI JOCKEY CLUB
SUCCESSFUL PAEROA MEETING. CONCLUDING DAY’S RESULTS. SHAW MEMORIAL TO MACROOM. The concluding day of the Ohinemuri Jockey Club’s fifty-second annual meeting took place on the Paeroa Racecourse on Monday. The weather was fine, with a stiff (south-easterly breeze prevailing. A large crowd attended, but the number did not reach the total of that of Saturday (St. Patrick's Day). As is legion with the Oiiinemuri Jockey Club, matters ran smoothly throughout. Under the guidance of the president (Mr H. R. Bush) and the secretary (Mr H. Poland) each steward and official performed hi s allotted task with cheerfulness and thoroughness, and this fact contributed in no small measure to the success of the meeting and also to the wide popularity which the Paeroa annual fixture has acquired. . The public were treated to an interesting period of racing, and there was only one race in which there was not a second dividend). Public fancy took a wide range, but on Monday no less than four favourites just’fied the confidence of the punters. The principal event, the Shaw Memorial Handicap, was won by Mrs P. Carter’s Macroom, which won comfortably by three-quarters of a length from Corinax. The owner was. not present to see the event, but the trainer, Mr M. j. Carroll, was the recipient of hearty congratulations. The only mishap to mar the day’s pleasure was when Fane failed to ■negotiate the double jump opposite the grandstand, in the Hauraki Plains Steeplechase. T. Healey, the rider, was thrown heavily, and sustained a broken left collarbone. The stipendiary steward, Mr A. W. Gordon, called the judicial committee together during the afternoon, and an inquiry was held into the bona tides Of the ownership of Whaka King, which ran second in the Komata Handicap on. Saturday. The result of the investigations is to be forwarded to the N.Z. Racing Conference.' Speculation was brisk throughout tihe day, and the sum of £29,850 10s was passed through the totalisator, which ite an increase of £BO6B on the figures for the corresponding last year.
