DISTRICT NEWS.
NGATEA. STREET LIGHTING. Ngatea township, seems to prefer being in darknesfc at night. At the beginning of February the street lights were extinguished by direction of the controlling committee as a means of impressing on townspeople and residents of the district that the lighting of tihe township was worth a small annual contribution. The lights are maintained by public subscription, but last year’s account is not yet paid, and the committee is not prepared) to have the lights switched on- until the financing is put on a sound- basis. The big light on the bridge is paid for by the County Council under its scheme of maintaining two -street lights in each riding, but apparently it was only last week that the power Board realised that the council did not pay it direct for this light, but made a contribution to the local committee. The bridge light was extinguished over a week ago, and the township now presents a dismal appearance at niglht. The fault has not been entirely that of the people, for collectors were appointed seven weeks ago and so far they have not completed their canvass. POWER STOPPAGE. A fault in the electric power mains along Hopai Road last Saturday morning caused an interruption in the supply of the whole area west of the The' Power Board’s officer at Ngatea. Piako River from 6 a.m. till 6.45 a.m. was not notified of the stoppage until 6.30 a.m., otherwise the supply would have been restored earlier. The fault on the Hopai Road mains was repaired as quickly as possible, and power was made available on tfhat section at 8.45 a.m.
