HAURAKI PLAINS COUNTY

MEETING OF COUNCIL.

ROUTINE BUSINESS-.

The Hauraki Plains County Council met at Ngatea yesterday, Mr E. L. Walton presiding over Crs. C. W. Harris, J. C. Midler, W. Madgwick, C. Parfitt, H. H. Hicks, J. A. Reid, A- L. Fisher, and F. J. Mayn. The engineer (Mr F. Basham) and the clerk (Mr E. A- Mahoney) were in attendance. FISHER’S WHARF. The Paera agent of the N.S.S. Co. wrote pointing out that a serious accident had nearly occurred at Fisher’s wharf, Netherton, through the breaking of part of the decking. He pointed out that the wharf was erected by the settlers, assisted by the company, and that until the county commenced using the wharf for landing''metal it was in good order, and likely to remain sid. Under the circumstances the county should effect repairs-.

The engineer said that he had given instructions to have all breakages made good. The matter was referred to the to the engineer for a report. NGATEA FACTORY HOUSES. The . architect, N.Z. Cooperative Dairy Company ,wrote intimating that it ,was intended to install a septic tank in connection with the residence proposed to be erected for the manager, Ngatea factory. Certain information was required. The work was sanctioned subject to the approval of the Health Department. NOXIOUS WEEDS H. R. Denize, Inspector of Stock, Thames, wrote advising that he co-operate with the council’s inspector in every way possible in the eradication of, or the prevention of, the spread! of noxious weeds. He understood that Mr Cameron had a warrant under the Act which gave him the necessary authority t.o deal with noxious weeds within the county without any further reference to the department.

Cr. Madgwick said that what was wanted was that all the inspectors “ tighten up ” on the matter. ; WATER FOR TURUA. E. J. Smith, secretary Puriri Ratepayers’ Association, wrote advising that at a recent meeting it whs decided to proceed with a water supply scheme. It had been suggested that some form of combined action might be of advantage to the Huirau Road and Turua districts. Cr. Madgwick reported that the matter would be discussed at a meeting shortly. It was accordingly decided to defer consideration of the matter. ABATTOIRS FOR PLAINS. . The Farmers’ Veterinary Club, Ngatea, wrote urging the council to again consider the advisability of establishing an. abattoir on the Plains. Should the council not see its way to support this it was urged that it consider as an alternative the driving of all stock for slaughter to the Thames abattoir. As the bridge was nearly finished this could be done without much trouble and.' would be a matter of great importance to the inhabitants of the county. Mr Hicks said that it was very apparent that the cost of an abattoir could not be considered. The chiairman said that the question was whether thei district warranted the expenditure. Councillors agreed with the necessity for the inspection of stock slaughtered for ihuman. consumption, but agreed with Mr Walton’s view as to present lack of warrant of expenditure. It was decided to reply accordingly. PIAKO RIVER WHARVES. After discusing the matter im commitee the council instructed the clerk to report, on all aspects of the taking over of het wharves by the council. PLAINS WEST DRAINAGE. A copy of the Gazette notice concerning the proclamation of the Hauraki Plains West Drainage' was received from the Department of Internal Affairs. The council expressed the opinion that the taking over of control by the settlers was to the encouraged, it therefore entered no objection. SPEED LIMITS-

The question of amending the bylaws concerning the limits of the speed of motors in the county was raised by the engineer. Cr. Milder said that at present the council apparently had' no speed limit by-laws.

Cr. Madgwick : Why not gM back to the old by-law ? The chairman stated: that the council, by resolution, had' expressed the opinion that the. by-law was junreasonabie. There was a long pr ocedure to be followed to amend a b’.F-law, 'and the first step was to give notice of intention to hold a special" meeting td consider the matter. This notice was given by the chair* man. MAUKORO BRIDGE. On the motion of Cr. Mayit it was again decided to urge on the JPiako County Council the early coniimehcement of the Maukoro bridge, and; to suggest that if the council was in difficulty it consider handing the job over to the Public Works Deps irtment, whiph had agreed tio/ undert® ,ke the work with the money available, AWAITI WATER SUPPLY. . In reply to Cr. Reid the chaimra u stated that so far nothing had been i heard of the proposed water supp>lj ' scheme for the Awaiti district.. AWAITI ROADS. 1

On the motion of Or. Reid'.thQ clerk was instructed to write to the Minister for Lands concerning a £2 for £1 subsidy for 'Await! district roads.TURUA TOWN ROADS; On the motion of Or. Madgwick £25was voted the Turua Town Board for expenditure on roads serving county ratepayers.
