WEATHER IN FEBRUARY
HAURAKI PLAINS REGISTRATIONS
The following notes are taken from the monthly weather summary of the Ngatea District High School, where the pupils, under the'supervision of the headmaster, daily register the weather changes.
Temperature. —Very high shade temperatures were registered all, through the month to the 25th, most, days the maximum shade reading being well over 80deg. T)ie hottest day was the 21st, when the mercury stood at 87deg. The mean shade temperature for the month was 7C'.7deg. „ Barometric Pressure. —The “glass was comparatively High and remained fairly steady till the 17th, after which date a gradual falling tendency was noted, presaging the wet weather of the’ end of the month. Wind.—The winds were variable and comparatively light to the 28th, when a strong south-east blow was experienced.
i Rainfall.—Rain fell, on only three days, the sth, 25th, and 27, when .04, .92, and 1.01 inches were registered, making the month’s total 1.97 inches. The immense value of the two days’ rain at the dose of the month to the hitherto parched plains will be realised when it is remembered that it represented approximately 200 tons of water to the acre.
The rain gauge at the office of the Lands Drainage Department, Kerepeehi, showed a total for the month of February of 2.28 inches, which, while below the average February fall for the last 15 years "is above the fall recorded in nine of them. Rain was recorded on four days, as follows: sth, .07 of an inch ; 25th, .04 ; 26th, .09 ; and 28th, 1.20 inches. The total rain so far this year is 2.29 inches.
