Further consideration of the drainage of the Opou area was given hy the Hauraki United Drainage Board at a special meeting on Friday last, and some previous decisions were altered. . . . In accordance with notice given a the last meeting Mr - J;, .C. Miller moved that the following resolution be revoked,: “That a new drain be constructed commencing at the south boundary o£ section 13, Block Vv, Wai'hou Survey District and: running northward to connect with the Green-way-Loader drain.’’ .Seconded by Mr F.,,L. Hamilton. Mr Kneebone was of the opinion that an engineer should be called in to report bn the matter. It should be
leaned up once and for all. . 1 Tht motion was carried on the votes t of Messrs ’ Miller, Hicks, Hamilton, and McDuff. , . . .J •Mr Miller then moved, in accord'* ( ance with notice given: “That the j present scheme for draining the area ( bounded by the Orchard East Road, ( Kerepeehi-Kopuaralii Road, Ware- j poa Road, and the boundary line ,of , the Horahia district be tried out with- ] out further expenditure of money, . and if found later on that a further < drain is required, then a qualified engineer be called in to report. Mr McDuff spoke against this, con- . tending that it would be quite wrong ,
to-restrict all work in the area. He . • coulflnot see the use of the resolution at all. < Mr Kneebone, again urged that an engineer be appointed at once to report on the matter. The chairman said that an engineer could not give beter advice than could ' Board members who were fuiy con-
versant with the position. Mr McDuff said that he would' support the motion if the same closure was applied to the rest of the Board’s area. Mr Thompson said that it would be unfair to the Opou area ratepayers to restict all expenditure. Mr F. L. Hamilton said that the point was overlooked that the Opou area was already carrying a special loan raised through the County Council. .• ' Discussion on the finance ensued until stopped by the chairman as out of order. Mr, J. C. Miller said that the original scheme had been carried out and it should be tried out before it was condemned as insufficient. The motion was seconded by Mr •Murray. As an amendment Mr Kneebone moved that an engineer be appointed to define what drainage, was required
in the area. Mr M'cDuff seconded. The amendment was defeated on the chairman’s casting vote. Messrs Thompson, Kneebone, andi McDuff voted for and Messrs Hamilton, Miller and 1 Murray against. Mr Hicks did not vote. f The motion was then carried on the votes of Messrs Murray, Hicks, Hamilton, and Miller. ( TE KAURI No. 2. IPader"as.king that his concrete paths r and pig shelters be replaced in good order after the Greenway-Loader drain was widened, Mr Thompson raised the point of the necessity of this work.
