KOMATA REEFS ROAD.

PETITION FROM SETTLERS. COUNCIL AUTHORISES REPAIRS. A petition bearing the signatures of ten ratepayers on the Koinata Reefs : road/was received/at Thursday’s meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council. The settlers stated that «'ing to the heavy traffic caused by e haulage of timber the road was in a very rough condition and in ur- . gent need of repairs. Cr. R. R- Morrison said it was the first intimation he had received about the state of the road ; he would like to hear more about it., . Cr. F. C.' 'Hubbard q|aid tfiat the /*road was soundly metalled, but the. ‘ water-tables had become filled up and in some.places stormwater had run over the road : and washed away the fines. Some of the worst places cou d be blinded at a small cost. In comparison with some other roads in the county the; settlers were not really badly off. However, if something was not done fairly soon the road would deteriorate seriously and the cost of repairs would be considerable. There was a fair quantity of metal in a handy position, but it was too large and not suitable. ’ Cr. W. F. Johnstone suggested tnar the ;metal, which was hand broken and of good Quality, should be removed to some other part of the county where it could be used to advantage. It was pointed out by Cr. Hubbar ”. that the road was subjected to con•f siderdble traffic, both motor and ' horsb-drawn, and he moved that a man be put on and the channels cleaned,-: and fines -spread where most urgently required. The chairman said the difficulty with many roads was that the watertables became silted up, through lack of attention, and were often as hig or higher than the road itself. . The resolution was carried, and the engineer was authorised to put the work in hand at once.
